Misty - Cerulean City Gym leader
Misty - Cerulean City Gym leader
Everyone whom has ever watched (The first, second and third seasons) Pokemon should know whom Misty is, she was the fiery redhead that kept both Ash and Brock in check, while pokemon was in it's height. Despite having three older sisters who are known to be famous/ gorgeous, Misty was called the Tomboyish Mermaid. Some of her accolades are

  • Beating Jessie in a Princess Day Tournament
  • Is the Current Cerulean City Gym Leader
  • IS the only Gym leader to appear in Super Smash Brothers (Trophy)
  • Is the youngest and only female trainer in Pokemon to be a water Gym leader.
  • Champion of the Alto Mare Race in Pokemon Heroes
  • Champion of the Seaking catching Day
  • Top 8 in the whirl island tournies

Despite all that she accomplished, she was replaced by May in the Third Generation. Misty's goal was simply to be the best Water Pokemon trainer, wheather it meant beating the girls or the Boy's her goal seemed to rival Ash's in a since. Though she makes appearances from time to time it's simply to appease long term fans. Misty had such a "swag" about her that just made her chemistry with Ash amazing. Ash and Misty had 3 battles with each other, the first was a tie, as Team Rocket interrupted, the Second Ash won, but Misty claimed the Prize, which was Togepi and the final Ash Won all of them considered to be the top battles in the history of the show.

 May
 May
I personally was never a fan of May, she was whiny, and overly emotional (but then again she is a 13 year old girl so i guess it's to be expected), I felt it was disrespectful to replace Misty with a girl whom didn't even like Pokemon! Eventually she tried it though starting her journey off with Torchic; in doing so becoming the first ever female Protagonist to start a journey. She had one Gym battle in her exploits and she was defeated, by Roxanne; she changed her mind and became a Pokemon coordinator. I hated the whole introduction of Pokemon contest it was Pokemon's way of saying. "You girl's aren't good enough to compete with Ash" . May eventually comes into her own and decides on what she wants to do. Win ribbons in different, regions and become the top coodinator.

Accomplishments

  • Collected 10 ribbons from different regions
  • Runner up at the Wallace Cup
  • Placed in the Top 8 in Kanto coordinator tourney's
  • Place in top 4 in the hoenn tourneys
May appeared a few times during the Diamond and Pearl Series, but she was eventually replaced by Dawn. What i hated about Dawn was that she was scared to make mistakes, this could possibly be because i was so used to Misty a trainer who knew what she was doing, (For the most part) that a new trainer really just seemed off. I guess it's not a stretch to think that I hated a trainer in Pokemon's Worst generation.

 Dawn
 Dawn
Then we get Dawn, and I knew she would be my favorite, when I watched the first episode of Pokemon and saw that Ash didn't show up until the last 10 mins. The thing about Dawn is she was essentially a female Ash; and she didn't take any crap from him either. They bickered they argued and still seemed to fit like brother and sister. Dawn started off a pokemon trainer and a coordinator, wanting to pursue being a pokemon champion. I applauded this at first, even though she would eventually be reduced to just contest.  Dawn had a strong since of confidence that is needed for being a pokemon trainer; which separates her from May. I believe Dawn was brought in to challenge Ash's right to be a main character. Dawn tried a few gym battles, and Ash tried a few Contest; neither of them succeding; For a brief time and period it seemed as if Dawn and her Hilarious Piplup where upstaging Ash.

Acheivements
 5 Sinnoh Ribbons
Heathrome Tag battle Contest Runner up
Hearthrome Collection winner
Pokemon Ping Pong tourney winner
Twinleaf Festival battle winner
Grand Festival Runner Up  Anyways we lose Dawn and now it's just blah, She was a great supporting character, unlike Brock who is starting to sound creepier as the series goes on. It would have been great to see her go up against the likes of Misty, Gary and Ritchie some of Ash's older rivals Anyways, she and Ash teamed up a few times during their time togather which are also ranked at the top as some of the best battles.

 Iris
 Iris
Now we have Iris, whom is in this 5th Generation of Pokemon. she is the 8th Gym leader of The Black and White series, which really gets confusing. Anyways not only do we lose, Dawn in the NEW GEN WE lost Brock as well. I haven't watched to much of the new series to know about IRIS , but she must be the first black female character.

What is it about the series that just makes it easy to replace a long term character like Misty or Dawn for that matter, Misty traveled with Ash for 3 seasons and Two generation. May got 2 and Dawn got 2 but no one every makes it into the next gen why?

This is going to make me sound like a cynical bastard but... "disposing" of the female companions of Ash keeps him young, at that precious stage between childhood and adolescence when girls are still icky. Which makes him that much more relatable to the 8 to 12 year demographic.

I am going to bookmark this for sure! I think the creator put Iris (a black female character) to repent for the Jinx stereotype for black people.

They're not saying that only girls can participate in contests, they only do that to show off the appeal of the contest because contests are fun and Ash has always been the one into Pokemon  battling. They needed the female characters to be into contests because Brock is already a breeder, Ash is already a gym battler, and so on. May and Dawn were the only options. Also, Misty, being a gym leader proves that they support females battling as well as males, it is in no way sexist.

To the thing about replacing them, well, I have had many friends throughout my life but I get new ones as I grow and we head down different paths, it's like a reflection of reality, which is rare for an Anime, especially this one in particular. If we're allowed to have other close friends, then why isn't Ash? Just because he is an Anime character? Pfft.. The fact that Ash had to depart with such good friends just shows the viewers how hard it is to let go of friends but then he makes new friends, showing that life moves on and you need to accept things for the better. Not to mention the fact that the characters in the games change due to updates. Personally, I think seeing the same characters over and over again would get really boring. Also, they needed new characters to fit the new events that were formed. When Generation three came along, of course they'd want to show off their new contest features in the Anime but would it really fit Misty's personality to dress up and enter? I think not, plus they wanted to add their new female from the game into it, they already missed out on adding Crystal, which is probably why She and Gold were in Pokemon Chronicles. I could go on forever but my hands would go numb.

Or maybe they just thought she was cute? I doubt they would have used any of the other females from Black and White because White and the other female gym leaders outfits are a little inappropriate for the Anime they can't use Bell because she is the rival in  the game and should stay a rival in the Anime. They can't use the professors and I'm pretty sure their budget can not afford to make up a new character, people were getting sick of Dawn (No matter how much people liked her, she would get boring.)  Therefore, they used Iris. She was the most suitable for the role of Ash's new travel buddy. You see where I am going with this?

@Ashchangau:  I agree the creators should make a replacement for Ash because he became the same old character after Johto. As for Iris, I hope she is like Misty and not whiny.

For the part where the female trainers do not make it the next generation is the new game is coming out and the creators need fresh faces. They won't replace Ash because he is an icon and add a new girl. Whether it's to imitate real life or the creator is just sexist, I am not really sure. It's just marketing strategy.

When did I say that they should replace Ash?  I did say that it was a good idea to change around the main characters so that the viewer does not  get bored of the series but to change the MAIN character? That is just preposterous. He was designed  the main character  and should continue to be the main character, there is no reason to change him into a completely new character just because some people have gotten bored of him, we have our new heroes, Iris and Dento and their new Pokemon and Ash's new Pokemon. Ash has a new out fit and a new eye color.. that should satisfy everyone for quite some time. They even added the new features that are found in the game. How can you say that there isn't enough change? Ok, I went on about that for too long, sorry... Um, Iris can be a bit whiny but she has her good points too, why don't you go watch the Anime? They're like twenty episodes out in Japan. =/ I could link you some. Ash is based off of the character you play as in Pokemon Red, the very first Pokemon game ever to be released, you couldn't play as a girl back then because it was originally supposed to be aimed at boys but they found many girls playing it, so they added a female choice. Marketing strategy? He's just the main character, that's all.. You never replace your main character.. I do know that some times the creators in Anime or whatever do that but not in this Anime, got it? They just don't role that way.

You can't just dump something that has so many fans and is making so much money just like that, what would be the sense in all of that? Plus, raging fan girls like myself would go on a ranpage if they dropped the entire project, especially since it's been getting really good lately. I'm all caught up and everything and so are a bunch of my friends, so they 'd be losing a lot of money. They'd get a huge load of fans up their butts about this. I'm not trying to sound rude or anything, I just hate it when people say things like that, but you are right about Pokemon Adventures, they NEED an Anime! Personally I do think that the Pokemon Adventures Manga is better than the Anime (Even though I really do love the Anime) and it deserves an Anime! I doubt we'll ever get one but it really should have one......... T^T

The main focus is Ash, the plot revolves and evolves around him. It's not that the females in the series are expendable, rather they accompany Ash to help the storyline. To get technical,  Satoshi Tajiri made Ash as a representation of him, as a kid. Tajiri also stated in an interview, he " felt the character represented the concept of the franchise, the human aspect, and was a necessity." So that's why the girls don't accompany Ash for extended periods of time.

I think they should have a new main character, seeing as Ash took a step back in his pokemon skills with this new series. He lost his first match in the fifth region to a guy who had just gotten his first pokemon!!!

People still like Ash and still find the Anime entertaining despite this though. So they're still making some good money off of him. It would also not make much sense if they just randomly replaced him with an all new character after 650+ episodes. I know other Anime do this as well but I in my opinion and the opinions of many others; it kind of kills the story line to randomly change the main character, They can't just end it either because of how popular it is, too many people would get upset and there would probably be a huge riot. Therefore, they have to continue and with Ash. It's been making them money and working for them, please don't try and fix what is not broken. Even though he lost against Trip, which doesn't make much sense, it's still a pretty good Anime and entertaining to watch.

Ash is the main character, and the females are just there to provide fresh faces every arc. Since he periodically switches to a new girl, I guess it implies he'll be that kind of guy when he grows up. I guess that kind of life is desirable for most young people, so it appeals to them? Just food for thought.

personally i think Pokemon needs to reboot start fresh from the beginning OR have Ash grow up and become a gym leader, have kids with misty (who he should have always been with) and have their son or daughter go out on their own adventure

@SMXLR8: That's because there is no set stature for race in pokemon. Iris, Brock and Lenora all fit with this trope
