How many of you have heard of Nuzlocke Runs? It's an enhanced difficulty style of playing Pokémon games.

Here are the rules:
1) If a pokémon faints, it is dead, and must be released. Revives are not allowed to be used.
2) You can only catch the first wild pokémon you see in an area. If you fail to catch it, you can't catch any pokémon in that route/dungeon/body of water. The only exception is that you can catch Shiny pokémon freely.
3) If you white out, game over, and erase the save data.

As you can imagine, the added risk of loss brings you closer to your pokémon. They become your brothers in battle, and they develop personalities in your mind. You become attached, and you grind even harder to minimise the risk of defeat.

My combusken, Ark,  just died on route 122.
He was level 31, knew Ember, Double Kick, Bulk Up, and Peck, and that bastard of a koffing used Selfdestruct while having next to no health.

You can't let your guard down for one second in this game.
Get the slightest bit cocky, and this game will punch you hard.

Rules are rules.
I released my starter pokémon.

Never forgive. Never forget. Never give up.
Nuzlocke Run.

@organicalistic_:  You get water and grass types left-right and centre in Hoenn, but you don't get any fire types for a while.

Currently training an Absol to fill the gap...

You can only catch the first pokemon you see in an area? That must drive you totally nuts.

@AgentJ: I've got like, five tentacool in my box and three zubats.
I lucked out in Meteor Falls and caught a Solrock though. That's a small mercy.

If I were making the rules, I'd at least say it would have to be the first pokemon you met that ISN'T one you've already caught. Seems more reasonable.

@AgentJ: If it was reasonable, then I wouldn't have had to release my starter pokémon.

The whole point of the game is to be hard as hell.

That's still be ridiculously hard, but you wouldn't have an inbox full of pidgeys. I mean, the idea it seems to me is to be realistic. A pokemon loses, and they die. You lose, the opponent attacks you, and you die. Its dangerous business. But what is realistic about a guy creating a geodude bank? Trading in the Sentret currency? Trainers would still be severely limited, but teams would be much more varied and diverse, and one could still have fun playing such a grueling game mode.

@AgentJ: Hey, everyone tweaks the rules to fit themselves. I'll admit that I give myself two chances to ignore a pokémon (IE Run from the battle, pretend I never saw it and that the next pokémon will be the first). Granted, that's cheating in the official rules, but hey, it got me pokérus.

I suppose whatever floats your boat :P
I've got too big a backlog to be making games harder for myself though... I always just play on medium.

@cfatalis: Emerald is much more challenging that Ruby/Sapphire. ESPECIALLY when Nuzlocking.

You might like a genre called rogue-likes.  Those rules you play by on your own volition are like cardinal laws for that genre.
