Pema is the wife of Air Bending Master Tenzin and mother to Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo.
Not much is known about Pema before she met Tenzin, but what is known is that the two met while Tenzin was in a complicated relationship with Lin Bei Fong. Gathering courage, she confessed to Tenzin how she felt as they eventually married as she moved to Air Temple Island to be with her airbending master of a husband; an event Lin still is upset about. While there, she became a mother to three children: Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo, all of whom are airbenders. Despite the antics that her children display, she does love and care for them as a mother should. She is currently pregnant with her fourth child as she hopes she doesn't have another airbending child, going as far as to ask Katara if Tenzin's siblings Kya and Bumi were this sporadic.
Pema was created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino for the new series in the Avatar franchise: The Legend of Korra. Her character may be a way to show that the ways of the airbender have not truly died and can live on with and through her. She makes her first appearance in Episode 1: Welcome to Republic City and is voiced by Maria Bamford.
When Korra is found to be the new Avatar and trains for seventeen years, Pema and the family go with Tenzin to meet with her and Katara. Pregnant with their fourth child, Pema confides in her mother-in-law that keeping up with her first three is difficult enough as is as Tenzin discusses with Korra about the events in Republic City and how she is not ready to accompany him at this time. When Korra goes anyway, Tenzin agrees to let her stay on the island as Pema welcomes her in as a member of the family. As Korra attempts to learn airbending, she and Tenzin butt heads as he asks his wife for guidance. Pema knows that all Korra needs is some space as she comforts Tenzin, stating that it'll all be okay.
When Tarrlok votes to assemble a task force to strike down Amon and his Equalists, he arrives unannounced to Tenzin's home. Tenzin is furious but Pema invites Tarrlok in as he is there to recruit Korra. After some pushing, she states no as Tarrlok later invites Korra, Tenzin, Pema, and the children to a gala for Korra. It is there she and others witness the press badger Korra into joining the task force; a job that she would take a leave of absence from due to several complications. Later, when Korra is trying to get romantic advice about Mako from Jinora and Ikki, Pema tells them the story of how she and Tenzin met and how a simple confession would do wonders. The next day, after running into Lin, Tenzin knows things got complicated as Korra correctfully deduces that Pema was referring to Lin in the story as Tenzin vows to talk with her about it.
