It's been a long time coming, today FUNimation finally announced the dub cast for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, the delightfully ridiculous and rude Gainax title. Instead of rambling on though I'll let Gangsta Afro Piccolo do the talking:

The credits and voices released are as follows:

Apparently FUNimation won't be releasing the show on Blu-Ray, but in my opinion standard definition will probably do just fine. Are you interested in checking out the FUNimation release?

I'll give an episode of the dub a listen but this show just didn't click with me so I only made it like 5 episodes.

I loved the show so I'll be checking it out. Had I never seen the JP BDs I'd be upset about it being DVD only but I own some and they are pretty bad considering how bright, colorful, and sharp you'd think this something like this would be.

The dub seemed appropriately mediocre. Garterbelt was pretty good considering it's a white guy doing his best non-rapper black guy voice. Panty and Stocking sound way too dull and boring for my tastes though.

I would love to get this but man, no blu-ray? Guess I'll wait for a blu-ray version.

@sotyfan16: Weird. Really seems like the nutty kind of show you'd enjoy. I loved it. Suit yourself though!

Yeah from what I've seen it's pretty blurry looking, which is a shame. Still it's good fun to watch regardless.

I just find it funny how there's a bit of Piccolo shining through there, I think I kinda like it. Not too sure about the other voices, with all the Enrish the Japanese Panty and Stocking spew out and English swearing, hearing the whole thing in English probably won't feel right. It won't be the same without Panty yelling "WAT DA FACK?!" you know?

For as excited as I am for this series. I'd rather wait for Blu-ray. I really don't get what Kadokawa is thinking.

While I was doing some of my research and sourcing for my article. I stumbled upon a comment that someone was really pissed off that FUNi cast a white guy to voice Garterbelt. He was calling them racist. Doesn't he realize that in the voice casting industry that it's not uncommon for women to voice men? Let alone in the original he was voiced by a Japanese man. I wonder if he was just as pissed off about Harvey Fierstein playing a Chinese man in MULAN?

@FoxxFireArt: @metalsnakezero:

With how FUNi releases series now, this will be a DVD-only release. Heaven's Lost Property: Forte was dropped from a BD to DVD. I bet it was because they felt they weren't going to get the sales they wanted. Only the really popular series or older series that used to not have a BD version are seeming to get BD-only releases. Just look at Fairy Tail as well. It has a DVD/BD Combo Pack.

@Daniel_Newton:

Sabat's natural voice has Piccolo and Vegeta mixed together. Guess I left that out when we were talking about him a while back.

And I think this series could be funnier with the English swearing. I'm such a kid-still getting a kick out of people cussing even though I do so all the time.

@sotyfan16:

Not really, FUNimation also dropped the Dragon Ball Z Kai BD. This didn't have to do with sales, but with a problem with how the series were being remastered. The quality wasn't there, so they dropped BD. FUNimation originally planned to release DVD and BD together for Panty and Stocking, but Kadokawa has put a halt on all BD releases.

@FoxxFireArt:

Then isn't it funny how FUNi is re-releasing DBZ in BD sets now? Doesn't exactly make sense that a newly made series won't work on BD compared to the original. But even if it was a quality issue for Kai, I bet most of the time a BD release is changed to a DVD (like the one I stated before) is because sales projections aren't good enough to merit it, or something like this Kadokawa deal happens.

@FoxxFireArt: @sotyfan16: Actually guys, FUNimation is still releasing Kai on Blu-ray, in fact they're even releasing season box sets now too. Now the Dragon Ball Z Blu-rays on the other hand, those were cancelled. They were restoring the entire show frame-by-frame from film, which it why the quality was so good, but it was taking too long and costing too much to do so they stopped after 2 sets I think.

This is my problem with what I've gleamed from the above video as well. When I considered the eventual dub of this a couple of years ago, I just could wrap my head around how bland it would sound in English. One of the highlights for me is hearing the pair spew profanity in broken English with an accent. It's utterly charming. It's somewhat like hearing a 5-year old curse. I know in my head it's wrong but the cuteness of it outweighs any misgivings I might have. The accent has something to do with it, as well. I admit I am disarmed by it just as I am when hearing Lum from Urusei Yatsura refer to Ataru as "Da'ling". For a series more close to home, I can't imagine Eva Gabor's character from Green Acres without her trademark "Da'ling" either. The point is a lot of the humor for the series will be lost by the translation. Still, I know that there are people who will never watch it any other way and due to its art style, probably won't even realize it's an anime.

As for the DVD-Blu Ray controversy, well The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack are only available in DVD, too so perhaps the animation won't be compromised much by the lower resolution.

@Daniel_Newton:

Ah. Well I think the trailer I saw for the DBZ BD was on Fairy Tail Part 2 and that's about 6 months old. It makes sense the releases would be canceled for cost.

I was going to mention this but someone already did. Funi is still all aboard the DBZ bandwagon, they just hit a critical mass where having DBZ on DVD (dragon boxes), re-edited DBZ on BD and DVD, and DBZ remastered on BD was too much DBZ at once. Plus, their frame by frame thing was probably too much for most. They probably would have had more success/sales if they did their remaster like years after Kai was done and the Dragon Boxes were long gone.

(Video's not working)

I haven't taken the time to watch this anime... It seems so popular I think I should.

Weird, it should be fine. It might not be available where you live. I'm sure there are plenty of other Panty & Stocking clips on YouTube if you want to check it out.

You should definitely check it out. There's nothing else out there quite like Panty & Stocking, that's for sure.
