Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

The anime series Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is a comedy anime series that leans heavily on parody and raunchy comedy. The series was produced by GAINAX. It's directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and the music composed by Taku Takahashi. The first episode aired on October 1, 2010 on the Japanese satellite service BS NTV, and was also simulcasted on the website Crunchyroll the same day.

The anime is for mature audiences only. The theme of sex and cursing are rampant throughout. The design of the series is uniquely American for a Japanese anime. All the of sound effects are illustrated using the English words in place of the standard Katakana. More often when characters curse, they are speaking in English.

Much of the comedy and scenes in the series parodies popular American culture and movies. This can be seen in the titles of many episodes.

On April 14th 2011, FUNimation Entertainment announced via Twitter that they had acquired the license to dub and distribute Panty and Stockings with Garterbelt, and they would release the complete anime series on DVD in July 10, 2012. Despite earlier statements about a simultaneous DVD and Blu-ray release, FUNimation was blocked from releasing the anime on Blu-ray by Kadokawa Pictures.

Inception

The inspiration for the series

According to an interview with series director Hiroyuki Imiashi in the November 2010 issue of Young Ace magazine, Imaishi and his staff went on a well needed vacation upon the completion of Gurren Lagan, another series that he directed. While on this vacation he and his staff began drinking and sharing their thoughts and ideas about what type of series they would like to work on next. The general theme of "vulgar and indecent jokes" as well as basic concepts and even the names of the central characters were established during these drunken brainstorming sessions. Additionally, series screenwriter and concept planner Hiromi Wakabayashi credits the American-produced Comedy Central series Drawn Together as a major influence on the tone and style of the show as well.

Plot

Panty & Stocking, the Anarchy Sisters

The fallen angels, Panty and her sister Stocking, have been cast from Heaven for their wicked ways and sent to Daten City. To redeem themselves and return to the kingdom, they must destroy the Ghosts that terrorize humanity, and guided by God's messenger Reverend Garterbelt. For each Ghost they destroy they earn Heaven Coins that will allow them to return to Heaven, once they have enough.

The only problem is that the Anarchy Sisters enjoy the pleasures of the world far too much to really be interested in returning. Panty loves the wild sex with all the studs she can get her hands or legs around. Stocking is far more interested in tasting every sweet delight this world has to offer. Still, the Ghosts cause enough trouble to get the sisters after them. Panty with her undies and Stocking with her leggings.

Standing in the sister's say are the demon sisters of the mayor, Scanty and Kneesocks. These two are out to stop Panty and Stocking at all costs while using their very own sexy weaponry.

Characters & Weaponry

The heavenly weapons the Anarchy Sisters can create are made from panties or stockings and are only effective against ghosts. Once they kill a ghost with their tools, the ghost disintegrates and the bells chime at the church they live at under the watchful eye of Garterbelt.

With the defeat of each ghost earns them a Heaven Coin. The amount each ghost releases upon termination is not known.

Panty - Back Lace

Panty can use her own underwear to create the special Angel weapon call Back Lace. Any pair of her panties will work, and she has to strip them off to use them. If she uses two pairs of panties, she can either duel wield or form them together to make a machine gun or sniper rifle.

Any underwear will to form into a weapon for Panty, they the person who they came from is what determines the kind of gun she can create. With guys it's about the shape and size of their equipment.

Stocking - Stripe I & II

Stocking with Stripe I

Stocking uses her own leggings to create a pair of Angel katanas call Stripe ! & II. She can either just use one or both together.

She can combine with Stripe I & II to create a single longer weapon to use in a spin attack.

When Panty is duel wielding her Back Lace, the second pair of panties often comes from her.

Scanty - Double Gold Lacy Tanga

Similar to Panty's ability, Scanty can form her panties into twin guns called Double Gold Lacy Tanga, but she always duel wields. When she is seen removing her panties there are two pairs seen coming out from under her skirt. She can combine her panties to create a shotgun.

Kneesocks - Double Gold Spandex

The weapons of Kneesocks is similar to Stocking. They mobe use their leggings, but Kneesock always uses both pairs to form them into duel scythes called Double Gold Spandex. These can be merged into a single larger scythe.

DVD & Blu-ray Release

The first DVD/Blu-ray volume of the anime Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was released in Japan on December 24, 2010, and subsequent volumes were released each following month. No news has been released yet on any US release dates for the anime on DVD.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Special Edition DVD/Blu-ray

A special edition for the Blue-ray was created for each volumes and released on the same day as the regular edition. The case of the disks came in pink and blue. It's all inclosed in a transparent case with two discs, one bonus disc; a copy of D,C Gossip Magazine, and a Panty & Stocking Original Sticker, a sticker sheet themed on the cover character.

The first soundtrack, titled Summer Wars Original Soundtrack ( 「パンティ＆ストッキング & ガーターベルト」 オリジナル・サウンドトラック , panti ando sutokkingu wizu gātāberuto orijinaru saundotorakku), was released by label flying DOG on December 29, 2010. Much of the music written and composed by and anime's own music composer ☆Taku Takahashi, but also included contributions from other artists and writers; such as Hoshina Anniversary, Teddy Loid, TCY Force, LISA., Jun Sasaki, and Mariya Ise.

A hidden track is rumored to also be included on the CD hinting at a possible second season could be in the future.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt THE WORST ALBUM

The second soundtrack, titled Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt THE WORST ALBUM (「パンティ＆ストッキング & ガーターベルト」 サ・ワースト・アルバム, panti ando sutokkingu wizu gātāberuto sa waasuto arubamu), was released by label flying DOG on July 20, 2011. The retail price was listed at ￥ 3,045.
