Panties have been around for quite some time and can be found in the majority of anime and manga franchises produced over the years. In most manga and anime franchises, the sight and color is often a guarded secret by young maidens. They can also be the thing of perverse obsession for some characters. Franchises that tend to have major ecchi and/or fan service themes are virtually guaranteed to feature panties, typically in the form of panty shots. It tends to be used as comic relief at times, since the enraged reaction of the female characters upon the hapless male characters that saw their panties usually results in a wild, painful beating at the male's expense.
