Fire Lord Ozai is the main villain of Avatar whom Aang must defeat. He is also Zuko's dad and helps continue the war.
Fire Lord Ozai was the youngest son of Fire Lord Azulon and the brother of Iroh. The brothers grew up in the capital city of the Fire Nation as Ozai stayed behind when his brother and nephew went to fight in the war. Growing up, he married Ursa and had two children: Zuko and Azula. While Zuko gravitated towards his mother, Azula and Ozai shared common bonds and traits of a ruthless nature. When news returned to the capital that Lu Ten, Iroh's only son had died on the battlefield, Ozai bluntly stated to his father that since Iroh had no lineage that the throne should be given to him. Shocked by his thoughts, Azulon ordered Ozai to kill his only son to share the pain of his brother. Instead, Ursa intervened and made an unknown deal that resulted in Azulon's death and her banishment to allow Ozai to become Fire Lord.
Years later, during a war meeting, Zuko spoke out of line against one of the generals as his father ordered an Agni Kai between the two because of Zuko's disrespect. When Zuko discovered that it was his own father he had to fight, Ozai held back nothing as he permanently scared his only son and banished him with his brother to find the Avatar; a seemingly fruitless search to keep his son away for the rest of his life.
Ozai was created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino for the series Avatar: The Last Airbender in the Avatar franchise. His purpose is that of the main antagonist that Aang must fight and defeat in order to end a hundred year old war. He makes his first appearance in Episode 8: Winter Solstice Part 2: Avatar Roku. Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill in the English version and was portrayed by Cliff Curtis in the live action film.
Ozai appears in only two of the video games in the Avatar franchise: The Burning Earth and Into the Inferno. While in the former, he is a background character, in the latter, he is the main antagonist of the game. He also makes an appearance in the video game adaptation of the film The Last Airbender.
A year after Zuko and Aang defeat Ozai, Zuko is now the reigning Fire Lord as he makes several demands to know where Ursa is. Ozai laughs it off, telling him to bring him tea as he'll tell him what happened. Ozai criticizes Zuko, knowing full well that there is more to being a leader than peace and that he'll be back. In the days before the summit with King Kuei about the Harmony Restoration Movement, Zuko meets with Ozai in the middle of the night, requesting help.
Ozai is portrated by Cliff Curtis in the live action film. As the movie covers the adventures of Aang in Book One, Ozai makes a very minimal presence in the movie itself.
