Seriously-- not that there aren't tons of Host Club fans out there, but I can't help but feel that most of them get so caught up in the pretty boys that they miss out a lot of the intelligence of the manga series. I also think a lot of people who haven't read/watched the series write it off as traditional shoujo fare.

But it really isn't. Most of the humor comes from over-the-top parodies of shoujo archetypes and other goofy situations-- but the drama comes from these kids just growing up and figuring out who they are (and who they want to be). By contrast, a more typical shoujo series of this flavor has its drama come from a somewhat more contrived place, usually crazy situations set up by weird coincidences, love triangles, etc.

Which is not to say that Ouran doesn't have a couple of those, especially as the series moves forward and the authoress, Bisco Hatori, moves more towards the possibility of a conclusion. But these moments are relatively few and far between.

Well, I love Ouran. Seeing as I'm a male, I'm not really in it for the pretty boys. It does make me laugh out loud, but mostly it's how well the characters are defined that really gets me. It's really hard to put it into words. Sure they all have there outer personalities, which are fun yet predictable, but Hatori is really talented in showing what characters really think. Giving the characters real depth that is hard to find in most typical shoujo manga. Also, this does make for really addicting drama.

I think some fans realize this, but others are in it for the pretty boys, especially those that have only watched as opposed to read.

I LOVED this manga, i only read it. Watched a few though. I don't go for the boys, but rather the "drama" and hilariousness!
