Haruhi Fujioka is the new freshman scholarship student at Ouran High School, a school so swanky-- and full of so many rich kids --that it actually has its own student-run Host Club. Haruhi encounters this club accidentally one day when searching for a quiet place to study. Instead, Haruhi knocks over a vase worth $80,000 and starts working as a gopher for the club to pay off the debt. One day, the club president Tamaki and the mischievous twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, give Haruhi a makeover and discover a perfect host-- attractive to clients by being perfectly natural and kind.
...It isn't until after this that they realize that Haruhi is a girl.
Haruhi remains a host, hiding her gender from their clients and her classmates. The daughter of a drag queen, she isn't all that hung up on gender roles anyway...in fact, the Host Club is more concerned about her secret than she is. Actually, the Host Club is more concerned about almost everything than she is. Yes, Haruhi is a shoujo anti-heroine. Combine her with Tamaki, the traditional "prince" archetype, the Shadow King Kyouya, pranksters Kaoru and Hikaru, the quietly observant Mori-sempai and the distressingly cute Hunny-sempai, and you've got one heck of a host club.
