MangaCast has word that Kodansha has announced the finalists for its third Morning International Manga Competition-- a whopping 27 finalists this time around. And of those 27, exactly 0 of them are from North America. Sad pandas!

No, the 27 finalists come primarily from other Southeast Asian countries-- China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Korea, and even Mongolia make up a full 21 of the 27 (if you're keeping track, that's about 78%). But a few countries outside of that area managed to get consideration: one manga from Israel, another from Argentina, Brazil, France, Colombia, and Italy make up the rest of the group.

You can't read any of the manga online yet, as far as I can tell, but you can read the winning manga from both the first and second competitions here and here, respectively. (It's also well worth remembering that even if we've been shut out of the finalists, the winner of the first competition was representing the US. Gooooo West!)

I wanted to go for it, but the stipulations weren't necessarily in my favor.

Yeah, a lot of these contests award rights to the people running them that creators aren't necessarily too happy about...

This just means North Americans have to step their game up.
