Overview

One Piece Volume 1 JPN
One Piece Volume 1 JPN

One Piece is a lighthearted, yet deeply moving, manga created by artist and writer, Eiichiro Oda. The first chapter was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. It's best known for it's off-beat characters, rich storyline, moving scenes, and heart-stopping action. A manga where death is rare, normally isolated to flashbacks; and side characters are abundant and never forgotten. It is a series ultimately about believing in your dreams, and the bonds of friendship that can be even stronger of those made in blood or steal.

" Monkey D. Luffy started out as just a kid with a dream--to become the greatest pirate in history! Stirred by the tales of pirate "Red-Haired" Shanks, Luffy vowed to become a pirate himself. That was before the enchanted Devil Fruit gave Luffy the power to stretch like rubber, at the cost of being unable to swim--a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog. Undeterred, Luffy set out to sea and recruited some crewmates--master swordsman Zoro; treasure-hunting theif Nami; lying sharpshooter Usopp, the high-kicking cheif Sanji; Chopper, the walkin' talkin' reindeer doctor; the mysterious archeologist Robin; cyborg shipwright Franky; and Brook. a musical skeleton. Alterations

For the series publication in the U.S., the VIZ Media company changed the name of Zoro to Zolo due to possible copyright issues with the fictional character Zorro. The Marines are called "NAVY", despite the fact the soldiers uniforms all say "MARINE" and the word "Navy" never actually appears in the series. All the Japaneses sound effects were changed in the art to be English. They did keep the pattern of names used in One Piece where everyone's family name is spoken first, followed by the given name. All the Japanese honorifics used in the series are removed.

During the entire Skypiea story arc, the villain Eneru is called a "Kami" in place of the title God. This in spite that in the Japanese version he is called God in English when talking about his title. Though Kami (神) is the Japanese word for God, the term Kami is never explained. Later in Volume 46 - Ch. 442, Zoro brings up that Luffy beat up a "God", and not the word "Kami". This was not a change done by FUNimation, who license the One Piece anime.
