Out of all the pilot episodes I’ve watched over the course of my WHAT THE F@#$ DID I JUST WATCH?! column… ONE PIECE has stuck out as one of the series I’d like to revisit one of these days. Rubber-limbed young master Monkey D. Luffy is one the more appealing characters I’ve encountered throughout my journey into anime and, as I understand ONE PIECE has more than 400 episodes under its belt, I know there are plenty more of his adventures to witness eventually. The funny thing is… it just got a lot easier for me to catch up on the rest of the show because FUNimation has just expanded the online licensing for the show.

I watched the first episode on Hulu and that’s where all of the officially-sanctioned have been. However, FUNimation has been “retiring” old episodes - - taking them down after a certain point. Now, according to Nebs TV,  those old episodes are being put on Viz’s site. But if you don’t like either of those websites (for whatever reason. Maybe you’ve got an axe to grind with them)… you can actually check episodes out on its official site and Crunchy Roll, well. Wow… four websites? They’re covering their bases.

Anyway, whenever I get around to checking out more of ONE PIECE, I won’t be wanting for places to watch it. Do you figure I should just continue on to the second episode? Or jump ahead to some possibly better ones?

Avoid VIZ's site. FUNimation.com is showing the series, and they do a really good job. Where they are showing right now, in the Alabasta Arc, is a good point to jump on if you don't want to run through about 100 episodes.
The reason I don't like the VIZ site is more of a personal matter I have with the publisher.
 
 They are also showing the latest episodes out of Japan on FUNimation's site. The subtitles there are pretty good. It is annoying how the drop episodes after a while, but I kind of understand it. That is a LOT of episodes to keep on that site in both dub and sub versions.
 
If you want to avoid filler episodes. Use the Anime Vice listing. I've filled out the information of the series from Episode 1-321. I clearly marked any episode that was filler.

I say you shoiuld go back and forth. Watch a few of the first arcs, then watch a more recent arc, then fill in the blanks. I jumped from when CN started airing One Piece with new American VAs (this was the one where they were in some kinda sky kingdom) to the Impel Down Ark.

There really is no reason to watch One Piece before the Alabasta arc. The only eps I'd say you need to see are the one's where the Straw Hat crew visit Gol D's execution site. After that Alabasta, latter half of Skypeia, CP9, and then whatever interests you after that.
 
There's no way I could waste time catching up with a show that is almost 450 episodes long.

Thats why it's best to read the manga, then watch the arcs or episodes in the anime that interest you. I usually only watch the anime for the voices, to see what t looks like and for the fights

I wonder when CR will get it and if they'll be allowed to translate it or or they'll be stuck with the official one.  I think the official sites (or maybe just Hulu) only add one old episode per week, which is crazy slow. 
 
I totally disagree with not watching before the Alabasta arc.  You'll completely miss all of the background story for every crew member.  Those stories are what got me into the series in the first place.

If you truly want to appreciate One Piece you need to watch the whole thing. It may take some time but you will grow to love the characters.  The Water 7 arc is what made me love the show.

@Gasero:  I ALWAYS believe you should watch the first arc of a show, and I'm not a fan of "it really gets good at episode ______"

 Crunchyroll is very very unlikely to get streaming rights to One Piece.  Funimation literally hates the site and wants it to go down in flames and they own the R1 streaming rights.  Whatever blog this info came from was incorrect and the comments made by the actual news post are fairly accurate.  Except that the page has nothing to do with when it was illegal, Crunchyroll runs it's own version of a wiki just like this site and that One Piece page is a part of that.

No one should ever miss the Arlong Park arc, truly the first epic arc in the show. @sickVisionz said:

I also agree with this statement, you should watch the first 100 episodes or so. Getting to know the crew's backstory and watching them evolve is one of the very charms One Piece brings to the table.

 Where have you read anything from Funimation that suggests a hatred of CrunchyRoll? Also it's hard to believe that the "blog site" known as Viz Press Releases doesn't have accurate information about Viz.

What that means in layman's terms is.... Screw you, we don't care if you go legit we won't play ball with you.  Bandai has been very slightly more tolerable.

Yes and that statement was in response to the news that Crunchyroll would be getting 4 million dollars of start up money so they could go legitimate.  Think about that for a minute.  Now realize that two years later.... and there is still not even one show that Funimation has R1 streaming rights to on Crunchyroll yet Bandai has made deals with them though not too many and only for catalog shows, Viz has worked with Crunchyroll, and even the Anime Network is joint streaming Heroman, before ADV had issues they worked with them, they even have some Geneon shows.  In other words every group getting anime streaming rights for R1 has worked with Crunchyroll except one.  Funimation.  Again please think about that for a moment.  In fact go read the  article Tom is specifically citing here which even says Funimation is in direct competition with Crunchyroll and may not want to allow them access to One Piece.

Then again if it's Toei that wants to share One Piece with Crunchyroll, Funi might have to let them."
 
I highlighted and underlined the important parts for you.  The key reality eluding you is this...  Viz does not have R1 streaming rights to One Piece so they have absolutely no say in who can stream it.  Funimation has those rights.  Funimation is highly unlikely to want to work with Crunchyroll but Toei the makers of the actual show One Piece "might" desire a deal with them and "might" be able to work one out depending on the terms of their deal with Funimation.

@Karkarov:  Yeah, I remember that. It's not like all is forgiven, but that's an old Crunchyroll. They are very legit now.
 
EDIT: It's business. If the deal is right, if it makes sense, Crunchy and Funi can end up shaking hands. OK, you're right, for now they are competitors. But competition isn't exactly hate.
