I do prefer my things uncensored in every way. Hell, I'm a very uncensored person (look at my Dunce Cap episodes for proof). But I admit that about half of my manga collection is of VIZ publication. Some of the manga I am reading I have seen the anime for and have noticed some differences-just not much in the translation department. I most likely just don't pay as much attention to detail as some but I am enjoying the stories with greater detail.

Now, I do read a lot of scans. Mostly because either the series isn't available in the US or the US publication is way behind. One example is Bakuman. I really love the manga (yeah, you guys have no idea) and anime but the manga is 3x as far in chapters in Japan than it is here in the US. After reading Vol. 6 I spent the next week reading all the subsequent chapters-to which I am now waiting for a new chapter each week.

Ok, back to being on-topic. I don't read the Big Three so I don't care. Also, I could care less about VIZ's digital release of manga because I prefer to have a physical copy. As I kind of stated above, I only read scans of what I can't get my hands on.

@ZombiePie:

Spoken like a true businessman. I applaud you. Running a business is about making money-the bottom line. Maybe @FoxxFireArt: should push for a petition if he wants VIZ to publish the original work.

@FoxxFireArt: Okay, I'll agree with that. Shikamaru lighting a cigarette in that scene was entirely essential to the scene as part of his mourning process, and while I'm not entirely surprised that Viz took it out (It's one thing to have Asuma or Sanji smoking; they're adults. Shikamaru is a kid) That STILL IRKS ME.

Viz was probably between a rock and a hard place there, but if I still bought Naruto (BTW volumes 28-43 of mine, in great shape, are for sale if anyone wants them) I would probably stop because of that change.

BTW Foxxfire, where do you find out about all of these censorings(?) ? I'd like to be able to look at all of these changes.

@sotyfan16: Lol, because online petitions always work :P

If VIZ still keeps up the practice of censoring titles I will still go read fan translations first.

@AgentJ:

It's the absolute idiocy of removing the cigarette lighting scene. In that same volume they just showed Asuma being murdered. That's saying you can watch a person be killed but not see someone lighting a cigarette. Also, he's not a kid anymore. Shikamaru should be about 17 by then. He smokes it for one page and never again. That's the kind of crap 4Kids used to pull.

This was an iconic moment in the series, that some idiot at VIZ removed. It's an inferior telling of the original story. This is VIZ's version of Naruto, and not Kishimoto's. Kodansha and Yen Press would never remove that. If VIZ refuses to give the real story they way the artist intended it to be told. I say go with scanlations. There was no translation notes in the back of the book explaining their change. They try to hide it.

I find out about their censorship, because I have already read the scan versions, and I hear from users online what has been changed. When I got to the bookstore. I check to see if it's true.

@secretzfan:

They censor a lot. I've already explained a few examples. It's also not just an issue of censorship, but also of poor quality in their localization and translations.

@FoxxFireArt: I'm telling you that I agree with you. Smoking under the age of 18 is illegal, and this is a good guy doing it (unlike murder, which is always the bad guys) so I'm not surprised they did it, and I can guarantee that if one of the other companies had a property as big as Naruto or One Piece they'd at least consider the change (Though AGAIN, it's not something I'd be cool with).

4Kids used to turn guns into head-smooshing machines. 4-kids was nearly as bad as it can get. this isn't... as bad. It's still bad. it's not AS bad. Shikamaru and Asuma were my favorite characters, and kept me paying attention right up until I completely stopped caring about the series. So this particular edit really pisses me off.

Where do you go to read from other users about the changes?

Nope, Viz translations are usually "Westernized," and pretty much everyone who read scans care about the translations being accurate to its Japanese counterpart

Okay, if they can release translated chapters within a week of their Japanese release, and if they can offer an uncensored version, then hell yeah i'll pay instead of going to scanlation sites.

I wouldn't suggest holding your breath on that one. It would be an act of suicide. They have shown no interest in producing manga uncensored.

They censor online releases as well, hard copies I understand but why online stuff? Oh well, until another company comes along we're stuck with viz.

@kashif1:

There are Kodansha Comics and Yen Press. They produce great manga. It's just that the series VIZ produces are a lost cause in manga cases. They don't censor every series, but when they so it's incredibly idiotic.

A lot of people (Foxxfire) complain about VIZ's censoring. Which i personally find to be annoying, but reasonable. Depending on the series of course, I haven't read any of the publications that apparently get the worst of it. But the one thing i have to complain about VIZ's releases, is the freaking dialogue in Naruto, which has just been awkward as hell for the last six or so volumes. There's been a lot of overcomplicated vocabulary and occasionally strange wording. Plus, the decision to change all uses of the words "father" or "mother" to ''pa'' and ''ma." Which has made the dramatic scenes where Naruto meets his parents for the first time incredibly narmy.

Their digital releases are sort of pointless. Not when they are the only publisher of manga still censoring many series on mass. If I wanted to read digitally. I'd go to scanlations for many of their series. At least there I wouldn't be getting an altered version of the story. No other publisher does that anymore.

It was a better idea for VIZ to increase their manga volume selection to try and catch up with the Japanese volumes for many series. Now, volumes for series such as Naruto, Bleach and One Piece are maybe only a few months to a year behind Japan.

They are releasing Chapter 7 of Evangelion in September??? That volume came out in the US over ten years ago. How is this suppose to be impressive?

I'd be more impressed and take them more seriously if they announced an end to the censorship or offering an uncensored option for readers. The way they do for anime and offer uncut versions. I'll have a hard time forgiving them for how the butchered Detective Conan in the US.

@AgentJ: @VanTesla:

In Naruto, they painted out the cigarette and the lighter from Shikamaru's hands and mouth in that issue where he lights the cigarette to say goodbye to Asuma. The page shows him making the motion of lighting the cigarette, but there is nothing in his hand or mouth.

That was only a few months ago.

@Halberdierv2:

The English production of VIZ Shonen Jump is one of the biggest wastes of paper imaginable. VIZ censors some content in that US Shonen Jump that they don't even do when published in the volume format. One example is in One Piece, the US Shonen Jump added an undershirt to her clothes to hide her cleavage, but it was removed for the volume. That Shonen Jump is so far behind it's an utter joke.

Now that last part I defiantly do agree with. Viz can sometimes have horrible translations. I remeber reading Tsubasa with entire chapters gone and it was the 1st chapter WTF. If Viz is censoring stuff like cigars by what u have said that isn't nearly as bad as 4 kids censors. At least they had a cigar. If a person going to censor do they need to at least do it right. No stupid censors of cigars and penises. But at least they keep the blood and that is the main thing.

I recently bought and read my first volume of manga. It's called Blood Blockade Battlefront and after reading this thread I was glad to find that it isn't published by Viz.

Anyway, I also ordered the first volume of Rosario Vampire and just want to know, if anyone can answer me, how accurate is the translation? I'm not super worried about censorship (though, if anything stands out, let me know) but rather the "westernization" that is being talked about. Would anyone who has read Rosario Vampire mind giving me their opinion on it's English translation?

Hmm for some reason I was not aware of this response until now. Whatever.

To my point I'm going to defend capitalism and private property before I champion consumer led corporate altruism. Print media in the United States is struggling across all boards, and either a large corporation publishes the works of Japan in the first place or we get nothing.

@secretzfan: Didn't Del Rey do Tsubasa?

In Rosario + Vampire Season II, Volume 2, chapter 6, Viz have added a bra to fake Kurumu's exposed breasts :@

Viz never censored Gokudera smoking cigarettes in Katekyo Htman Reborn!, even though he is underage. I guess that would completely ruin the character XD

Oh, and they've censored some dialogue in Chapters 1 and 2. For example, instead of Mizore saying to Tsukune, "Let's make a baby", she now says, "Let's make snowflakes". :L
