One Piece Episode Leaked a Day Early (Update)

One Piece leaked early
FUNimation shut down stream
The whole world is sad

I hope you enjoyed my haiku that summarizes FUNimation’s current situation. Basically someone accessed One Piece episode 403 a day before it was released in Japan, with subtitles and everything; and stuck it up on the internet. It was supposed to premier on FUNimation’s video site today (May 30) at 9 CDT, but ever since this went down the video streaming service has been shut off. It is currently unknown when the security breach will be fixed, and if it will be finished by the time the simulcast is supposed to air.

I can’t imagine Toei being too happy about this recent event. Let’s hope this does not hinder the simulcast any more than it already has.

FUNimation has responded to this attack with the following message.

As anime fans know, FUNimation Entertainment and Toei Animation had planned for the first ever online simulcast of the series ‘One Piece’ tonight at 9:00 pm CDT., just one hour after its premiere on Japan’s Fuji Television. Unfortunately, in the last 24 hours we have determined that the FUNimation servers were compromised, even though we employ strict security standards. An unknown individual accessed and posted episode 403 online and as a direct result of this illegal act, all U.S. and Canadian fans will be deprived of access to this great anime series for the immediate future. We will make every effort to locate and prosecute the perpetrator(s)to the fullest extent of the law and will provide updates regarding this most serious matter

Frankly I'd be annoyed at those who took advantage of the situation, but unfortunately there are plenty of those out there.

Why can't people recognize when we have a good thing and leave it alone.  Funimation and Toei had given One Piece Fans a good deal and now someone has to mess it up.  I hope this does not stop it all together.

Is there some kind of public shaming we can give the people who stole it, fansubbed it, and posted it online? Can anyone track down their e-mail addresses, facebooks or LJ's so we can send them hatemail? Because this would never be an issue if everyone played nice. But apparently anime fans can't do that. They're too busy being self-serving, selfish little idiots who want to splatter their screen names and stroke their little egos for posting someonelses hard work and calling it "fandom!".

This is really, really sad and discouraging, and it's probably the fault of handful of jerks.

@paploo: When a game company has a leak, they don't say "Oh, well I guess we're not going to let you have video games anymore." When a movie studio has a leak, they don't say "Oh, well we're not going to let anyone watch our movie now." This is a case of Funimation not being careful with where they put their files, the file getting leaked (as would happen with anything in any fandom) and instead of trying to learn from their mistake, Toei decides to be a douchebag and pull the program. This isn't so much the anime fandom being full of terrible people but rather a case of corporate overreaction to something that happens pretty damn often in the entertainment industry.

@Sigue:  I think they'd be in their rights to pull the FUNi program if they felt it might happen again. Prior to this they were working "just fine," why complicate this.  I mean, this leaked One Piece to Japan. Just think about that one for a second.

What an unpleasant happening.

Sigue--- It's not that Funi's NOT going to release One Piece anymore. There'll still be dvd's, television broadcasts [if anyone takes them up on it], merchandise and what not. They aren't taking One Piece away. This is more like if a company put a sneak peek of a video game online for a specific time and region, and took it off when fans found a way around whatever restrictions they put in place.

Toei's not the douchebag- they're trying to protect their ratings in Japan, as in the primary thing that keeps them employed and One Piece in production. This is something that might of actually threatened the further production of the show itself. Shows depend on ratings, dvd sales, advertising fees from legit streams, and cannot get by alone on fandom love [which given the situation, is apparently a creepy, clingy love of a bad boyfriend they should probably put a restraining order on]

The real "douchebag " here is the fan who got into Funi's website, posted it online, and the co-"douchebags" who fansubbed it, distributed and downloaded it. I wish fandom wasn't so full of these "douchebags".

I hate that fans keep shitting on anime companies, artists and industry employees when there's this large crowd of idiots who really deserve their hate, yet they keep defending. Funimation gave us something really nice, and as others have said, apparently we can't have nice things. If this is what anime fans do, and how they react to this situation, they deserve to have it taken away. I wish fans weren't so stupid. I'm tired of it.

@paploo:  looks to me like the culprits are horriblesubs, a group that previously concentrated on stealing video from crunchyroll (why? -- it's damn cheap, free even if you don't mind waiting) -- I don't know if they are responsible for the leak/hack or just capitalized on it.  I don't want to link to their site, or the torrent, but some searching will turn up both, and they maintain a site at an obvious .org

@rocketbomber: no, HorribleSubs just did a copy/re-encode of it. The original release was put up on NyaaTorrents and was listed as "[FUNi-Toei-Fuji] One Piece - 403 [FLASH 640x360.flv]."

Seriously though, this is really lame. I can't tell if this was fan stupid enough to think that fans shouldn't have to wait a day-- which is incredibly dumb considering that this was early for Japan as well --or, and I think this is more likely, that they're downright malicious.

Look, I'm not one for sitting here and bawling out every single fansub downloader in the world (talk about a waste of time). But why the hell do people think it's "cool"-- much less OKAY! --to intentionally ruin shit for the people who freakin' create and localize anime, and the fans who want to support those people?

I'm more surprised that no more attention is being given to the fact that Funimation had loaded the episode on its Flash Video server without any security measures.  The link was up for almost all of Friday and early this morning before it got caught last night and someone sent me both the then live video link and the TokyoTosho release page.

@HSaabedra: FUNimation is a pretty standard office, I think-- who works weekends? On Friday they probably set the episode to go live when it was supposed to, and someone probably had to drive back into the office to go and take down the file, AFTER that person had been informed of the problem. Should their security have been better? Yes. And if the guy who had found the file had just passed it around, I'd have a hard time blaming 'em.

But whoever put up a torrent is a complete fucktard. I'm with gia. What fucking moron thinks this makes them anything but an asshole who's trying to wreck things for everyone else?

I think it's more likely this was just some dude/dudette who knew that companies usually upload these files well in advance and decided to manipulate the URL to see if they could get early access to the ep. The same thing happened on Giant Bomb where people got access to as much as 2 or 3 eps of the Persona 4 Endurance Run before they were officially made public (I'm gonna assume it's been fixed now, but I dunno for sure... if not, then the same problem should exist here on AV).

They probably didn't even think of the consequences (I know I wouldn't have).

@Axersia: If they didn't think of the consequences, they're idiots, and I hope they come out and apologize and take responsibility instead of slinking away and hoping they don't get caught.

And that they don't ever reproduce.
