Has anybody else been reminded of the infamous trash compactor scene from A NEW HOPE whilst watching this extended meet-cut between Luffy and Momonosuke? I’m half-expecting them to start panicking because some sea serpent slithering down in the trash around their feet.

This, at last, has to be the “straw breaking the camel’s back” moment you lunatics have been warning me about for so long. And it honestly makes Luffy out to be seriously thick headed. He hasn’t been able to guess that Caesar’s had the worst of intentions for poisoning and otherwise mutating these kids? He really needs one of the victims to actually come out and tell him so explicitly before he'll get upset about it?

We’re talking about our typical shonen lead, of course, and they’re wonderfully free of character flaws, for the most part. However, if we’re to meditate upon it (and that’s the whole point of an episode-by-episode write-up, natch) this honestly seems like one of the quirks that’d make Luffy a little less-than-charming to actually be around. To whit, it furthers my theory about him actually being willfully removed from his own (outlandish) reality. It's the same state of top-down denial that’s also making him intentionally avoid any logical steps to reach the One Piece.

Another piece to the eventual thesis…

On another note, I find Oda’s choice to render Mononosuke’s human form as a constant, unrealistic silhouette to be rather oddly endearing. Most others adventures would jump through a lot of hoops and use a lot of awkward camera angles to conceal a surprise like that. Oda? He opts to just go for the easiest and most direct route. You can picture him basically just playing a shell game with his hands and winking at the audience, saying, “Nah-nah-nah… you weren’t going to see this just yet.”

Watch this episode, "A Small Dragon! Momonosuke Appears!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous episode here.

I don't think it's the fact that Caesar has been experimenting on the kids hat has Luffy pissed off. It's when Momonosuke tells Luffy that this will lead to the kid's death in five years. It's that this guy will arrogantly experiment on these kids in a way that will kill them, and that he's amused by the idea. Laughing at the impending death of children.

Back when I reviewed this chapter for the site, I remarked on how Momonosuke holds a rather remarkable comparison to a young Shenron. It wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't intentional.

It wasn't the experimenting that got Luffy mad, it was the part about CC laughing at the children fates. I read it as Luffy was keeping his cool, not being dumb. (Luffy know what happening around him) But when Momonosuke tell Luffy that story, that final straw for Luffy (it seem Luffy now have a three strike your out rule)

Lucky for Luffy, being smart doesn't seem to be a qualification to become King of the Pirates.

So I don't keep up with all the Devil Fruit details. So Zoan types are creatures and Logia types use projectiles? I feel like that's not the best definition

@FoxxFireArt: Momonosuke looks like a classic Japanese depiction of a dragon- perfectly befitting someone who was brought up to be a proud samurai.

You're right, though. he definitely looks like Shenron, because Shenron has those horns that look deer-like. I bet it's a shout-out to DBZ. If I could speak Japanese, I would read as many Oda interviews as I could get my hands on, so I could see just how into pop culture he is.

Zoan are animal/creature-type devil fruits. Logia are elemental-type. Their bodies are nearly intangible and next to impossible to injure. Attacks will just pass through their bodies.. You need sea prism stone or Haki to be able to touch them.

So experimenting on the kids is ok except for the fact that it will kill them and you find it funny....? Wow...luffies moral center is a little messed up. THAT deserves further discussion, especially given Japans association with Nazais in the past...
