Community Spotlight: Wiki Madness

" And with this comment the Anime Vice Spotlight is officially more sucessful than my Giant Bomb Spotlight! Good work guys! "

I picked a great week for not contributing anything.

But really, these comments and related discussions on our sister sites aren't doing the community any favors. I daresay the discussion in the comments for this Spotlight is almost as bad as the controversy the media started against the video game industry at large - particularly towards the Japanese side of it (now Tokyo's government is trying to censor these things at will) - after they found out about RapeLay.

Have people never seen anything risqué in their everyday lives? Were these reactions just prompted for the fact that the risqué artwork of the image was in the style of anime and featuring characters from a recently aired, largely hyped anime series?

People really shouldn't be commenting here at all unless they have something to say about the actual content this community generates, hence the purpose of the Spotlight. Anyway, who had the genius idea to associate the community with an image and call it "zero effort" rather than look at actual wiki contributions and blogs people spent so much time on? I'm not one for strict moderation, but that one GB thread is so ridiculous I'm not sure why it still exists.

Now on the topic of the actual substance users have brought to this community, it's especially nice to see continuity in blogs as of late. For example I especially appreciate JJOR64's mini reviews for anime series and sickVisionz's monthly purchases blogs - there's usually a lot of insight to be found in blogs like that.

I'll address this. The Giant Bomb users have the freedom to voice opposition to the way that Anime Vice is directed and conducts itself. Just as you have the right to declare it as not a big deal. To say that Anime Vice is a reflection of all Whiskey Media sites is an opinion that many users on Giant Bomb believe hence the concern and creation of that topic. Until the logic becomes circular or highly inflammatory, which it has occasionally but not entirely, it stands as an open thread where people are allowed to voice their opinions.

What a shit show, I love how the community here is okay with being painted as a bunch of horny 14 yr olds. Do you no understand the reason why that image was was bad is not because omg boobs, but because it had nothing to do with the article it's self, whats wrong with using that banner you guys have up there over naked girls. It's pretty clear it was an active choice to get more views and it makes you're whole web site look retarded. Dunno why anyone would want to be apart of this site where the staff portray you as idiots.

The Twitter account reaffirms this, no intention of changing anything or even admitting it was a mistake, just happy to get dem clicks. What ever.

@zombiepie: While I understand this, I just wanted to express my frustration at that thread with that point. In fact, I'm ultimately going to post there myself to address the OP of that thread directly, even if it's futile (I can already see some counter-arguments that can be made to my potential reply to that thread).

It isn't even the whole concept of looking at Anime Vice as a reflection of WM that frustrated me - it's how he tries to claim that there is "zero effort" in Anime Vice when the content contributes by many of its users prove otherwise. Him passing judgment on Anime Vice over that image is so silly it should be criminal!

So you sign up on Anime Vice, the site you absolutely loath because of one DREADFUL image, just so you can continue you childish rage elsewhere?

You say the image makes Anime Vice look retarded. You're one of the reasons why the Giant Bomb forums are an absolute shithole from time to time.

I just think that's funny.

@jeffsekai: Did you not read the second sentence of the first paragraph of the article?

"The VIZ publication of Shonen Jump celebrates it's 100th issue, Highschool of the Dead anime is getting dub cast for a U.S. release,."

If you haven't noticed, Anime Vice Community Spotlights typically have a featured image related to the first anime series or anime-related concept mentioned in the Spotlight post. In this case it just so happened that High School of the Dead was the week's big news due to the confirmation that it'll be dubbed so it was mentioned first and thus they chose a picture that is reflective of the anime series. Your "it had nothing to do with the article itself" is a poor argument in context with what they typically do for these things.

Thank you very much for the notice, FoxxFireArt! *bows* I just hope other people, like AnnaBanana and takashichea who have been working very, VERY hard on Fairy Tail and Beelzebub, get recognition for their hard work.

For those complaining about the picture: GROW UP ALREADY. IT IS A PICTURE. The reason people don't like AV, if that's true, is because YOU BLOW THINGS OUT OF PROPORTION.

Please, relax. Chill out. DO. NOT. OVEREXAGGERATE. And just work hard to make AV better, aight?

@MrKlorox:  Lol I did do something wrong there. The main question was actually why would you post that claim if you didn't actually knew anything about most anime?

But I already guessed that you'd rather do that and believe some other guy who also doesn't know what he is talking about. You guys are really making a good case here. :P

Actually that's mentioned twice in the article, that one time and also in the wiki section. But the all knowledgeable GB'rs of course (did not) knew that in advance before going all nazi vs Hebrew on our asses (at least they let us use their ''showers'' for free! :D Wait...) and using the fact that the picture which had nothing to do with the article (even though its mentioned twice) as a reason (or rather excuse) to do so.

Real classy

So..my article is basically the real source of all the hate from users of other WM sites? Shit, shame on all of you!

I'd like to first off say that the Staff usually picks the picture for the article so if any of you have a problem then talk to them. But on top of that, the girls aren't naked and Anime Vice is certainly not run by 14 yr old perverts. The Staff and users of this site pour their hearts and souls into making and upkeeping a fun and intersting community that shares and informs. Also, as a couple users have stated, the picture does have to do with the article because Highschool of the Dead was mentioned twice; once for the Wiki and once for another article.

@zombiepie:
I don't think HOTD would cause such reactions while watching it drunk. However, if one was high then I think things would be a bit more interesting.

1 Yes its linked to his twitter where he made the jokes and I though since Spoony is becoming more and more aggressive due to his own reasons it would be funny to use. http://twitter.com/@TheSpoonyOne Not that it since it matters because my post was a joke.... It is funny to see that you removed my edit in your quote to make it look like it wasn't.

2 True I give you that I was cranky. I apologize to any survivors or family members of the victims.  I will not however apologize to GB'rs because that's pretty much how they are acting right now. They are using an untrue excuse to pretty much condemn a whole community of people who they've never even met. Even the solid stuff doesn't even add up since Hentai is allowed on the wiki because the staffmembers allow it too. Not because the users want it so badly. Also there are only like 5 users in total who upload hentai pictures.... Is that they whole community? Is that a good reason to be pissed at the whole community? NO! And what's even worse is that I'm pretty sure GB has got lots of those pictures to from games like Leisure Suit Larry and  crap like that sex beach game thing I read about in the Power Unlimited a decade ago. And that's probaly been uploaded by the same damn 5 people who uploaded hentai here. The only remotely thing we got here that might be seen as perverted is the Plain Hot thread where I occasionally post a collection of pictures once in a while, and that thread is for both male and female pictures. Its also PG-13 which is allowed even on GB and I dare you to find a nipple! go ahead make my day :P. I can't really that we are privileged with that. Every site got a set of rules that apply diffirently to people. Here we can have a few PG-13 hot threads. At your side of the fence you get banned for such stuff, but you can however flame at each other till hell freezes over. Whilst here you get warned and eventually banned for it! So bottom line is that right now GB'rs are overreacting about stuff that they really could have overlooked at least once.

Also back to the nazi analogy.... your like a Gestapo only seeing negative my words, whilst ignoring the true facts given to you like they don't matter.

Yeah, when you're high your standards for entertainment plummet and even watching the preview channel can be entertaining.  Watching something like High School of the Dead while high might cause you to immediately blog (assuming you weren't too lazy to type) that this was easily and clear cut one of the best things ever made in not just the history of anime, but the history of things in general.

@jeffsekai: While you're a bit ranty, I see where he is coming from and I thought the same thing everytime I see some fanservice fiesta image used.  Yes, HSotD is mentioned in the article.  There's nothing wrong with using an image from it, but why use the most boob-filled lesbian tinged picture you can find?  I mean, that picture isn't even a screenshot from the show or really representative of the series, it's just pornish fan art or pornish official art.

This thread has gotten more comments than normal so mission accomplished I guess, but like someone else said: one step forward, two steps back.

@Kelleth: Fair does, I missed the edit when I was trimming your post for the relevant part. Didn't want to appear aggressive, was curious s'all. -10 to my reading comprehension I guess.

As for the second part...is that directed at me? I can't tell, the editing seems to have gotten screwed up.  (if it is I'm not a GBer so that paragraph's kind of irrelevant).

Yeah and I'm really sorry for that. Today wasn't really a day for me to talk to people much less quote anyone.

My deepest apologies, and it will not happen again. Now i'm going to check the rest of my mail and do something that doesn't involve human contact >_>

Not everyone knows that the image is from High School of the Dead, or that the images are picked based on what anime is mentioned first.

This is not some sort of GB vs. AV Holocaust (real classy comparison, btw).  Yes, High School of the Dead is mentioned in the article, but that's not what the article is about; it's about the Anime Vice community.  That is the crux of the problem.  The image is used on an article representing your community.  There are other images (from your own site none the less) that could have been used that don't show the characters is such a suggestive way.  If that image was used for a High School of the Dead exclusive article, I highly doubt it would have grabbed the same attention.

If you'd look past the blind hate you'd see that this is not an attack on Anime Vice or anime and its fans in general.  People want AV's reputation to change.  I don't like to see people (on GB at least) calling AV the black sheep or red-headed stepchild of Whiskey Media where creeps go to get their porn fix.  I know it's not true and the crack-down on hentai was a huge step in the right direction.  But can you not see the problem then with using this to represent the Anime Vice community?

That's really the only problem here.  I know nothing is going to change for this article.  I just want whoever picks the images to keep it in mind when picking future Community Spotlight images.
