The story begins with a boy, who, while playing hide-and-seek finds an old lamp in the basement. He runs off with it towards his granfather, inquiring about the object, and thus his grandfather tells him the story behind it. In the beggining of the century amidst the process of westernization the Japan was still suffering, a young orphan boy, adopted by the village chief, struggles with the means to survive in live, making some Chores pocket money here and there. One day after helping a rider carry a customer to the big city, we finds a Lamp shop, ablazed by the objects he promptly tries to make a deal in selling lamps in his own village. The business seems to be going well, he has married since and had two kids, until the moderization hits again with the coming of electrical power.
