Komugi Nakahara is a hyperactive airhead whose main ambition in life is to wear costumes based on famous characters-compare to Cosplay Complex. When she gets a job at a café where she can dress up all day, she's in heaven. She doesn't even dream that there's such a place as Vaccine World, or that Ungrar the King of Viruses has escaped from prison there, but when the Goddess of Vaccine World sends cute critter Mugimaru to Earth to find a suitable candidate to accept the powers of the Nurse Witch and defend mankind (or at least Akihabara) from the Virus King, she's ready and willing, if not particularly able.
This parody offshoot of the Soul Taker anime series has its amusing moments. In one episode Komugi dresses up as the whole Battle of the Planets team without even taking off her trademark rabbit ears, and Tokyo's Big Sight convention center turns into giant robot Big Sightron during Comic Market. Most of the Soul Taker cast turns up at some point, and throughout Komugi is tormented by her cosplay rival, Magical Maid Koyori. A half hour "special" NWK Magical Te (2002) appeared two weeks before the series was released, and just to confuse matters it's set between episodes 2 and 3 of the series. It is included on the English language DVD as episode 2.5, in which tortured hero Kyosuke, object of Komugi's obsessive desire, becomes a rock star. The two-part NWK Magicarte Z followed in 2004.
Parody can be a rewarding genre, but if the parody is the only thing the show has going for it the jokes need to be plentiful and broad enough for anyone to catch. As anyone who's ever been stuck in the middle of the row at a Worldcon Masquerade watching a group of Danes performing a skit on the complete works of Michael Moorcock can tell you, jokes which go down a storm to an audience of hardcore fans don't always play outside that narrow circle. A handful of nods and winks in the direction of industry giants is small reward for three hours of your life.
