Noein is an alternate version of Yū Gotō who once endeavored to destroy the Multiverse and create a single reality that embodied his vision of how all things should be using the power of the legendary Dragon Torque.
Noein was once the Yū Gotō of another universe in which he survived a fatal car crash that instantly killed his teacher Ms. Yukie and his two friends Ai and Isami and forced him to helplessly endure the pain and suffering of watching Haruka, the girl he loved, die right before his very eyes as the car exploded moments following the accidents initial occurrence.
Unable to bear the pain of living in a world without her, Noein somehow discovered the key to traversing the Multiverse and ventured off across time and space in search of another Haruka. However, as he traveled from one Universe to the next Noein discovered that all of his counterparts were suffering the pain of losing Haruka in their worlds just as he had in his.
Noein went insane and cast aside his Humanity, gaining the powers of a God in the process. Upon returning to his Universe, Noein came up with an idea to converge every timespace in the Multiverse together as one and use the power of the legendary Dragon Torque to destroy existence and then create a new reality free of pain and suffering.
With the aid of several others who shared his vision, Noein took control of his Universe by force, thus igniting an apocalyptic third world war and reshaped it into the initial framework for Shangri'la. Noein then constructed a massive fleet of artificially-intelligent dimension-hopping warships and sent them out into the Multiverse.
Thanks to these warships, Shangri'la began to expand and consume other realities into itself, therefore completing stage one of Noein's nihilistic grand scheme. At some point the Universe known as La'cryma performed an experiment which accidentally broke down the barriers between their world and Noein's domain.
The mechanized forces under Noein's command began to invade La'cryma and reduced the surface world to a burning wasteland, thus igniting a war between the two Universes that would go on for 15 years until Noein learned that The Dragon Torque was actually a younger version of Haruka from the reality which his Universe had originally diverged from.
When The Dragon Knights of La'cryma learned about this they attempted to kidnap Haruka in an attempt to use her power for their own selfish needs. This brought Noein's wrath down upon them and inadvertently placed Haruka and the rest of her Universe (Hakodate) at the heart of the interdimensional war between La'cryma and Shangri'la when he forced all of The Dragon Knights to return to La'cryma against their will.
It was around this time that Noein forged an alliance with Kuina, a mentally-unstable and rapidly-deteriorating Dragon Knight from La'cryma who became convinced that his world was a lost cause and was obsessed with reaching Shangri'la to escape the Hell he had called home for so very long.
This alliance was formed around a bargain that Kuina believed would allow him to reach Shangri'la, however it soon turned out that Noein had only been using Kuina and never had any intention of fulfilling his end of the deal.
Noein was drawn to Hakodate when Haruka used her powers to stop Karasu and Fukurou (an older Isami) from fighting any longer and to begin reconciling their old friendship. However, Noein made his presence known almost immediately by appearing behind Fukurou and wrapping his arms tightly around him.
Unable to stop Noein, a fear-stricken Haruka and a severely injured Karasu, were forced to watch as Fukurou was torn to pieces by Noein's power. Shortly after Fukurou's death, Karasu swore vengeance upon Noein, but Karasu's oath of vengeance was ignored by Noein.
Later, Noein would confront Karasu in battle after Noein traveled to La'cryma with a trio of warships from Shangri'la, all of which were destroyed, thus forcing Noein to retreat.
When the war between Shangri'la, La'cryma and Hakodate reached its apex, Noein arrived in Hakodate and confronted Karasu once more in battle, a battle which Noein gained the upper hand in and won.
Noein kidnapped Haruka and brought her to Shangri'la where he attempted to manipulate her into fulfilling his wish by destroying The Multiverse and creating a single reality without pain or sorrow.
However, Kuina interrupted Noein's discussion and tried to use her as a bargaining chip so that Noein would fulfill his end of their bargain. Noein refused to do so however and reclaimed Haruka shortly after Kuina was erased from existence by Shangri'la itself, which had "rejected" him and removed him from all timespaces.
It was not long before Noein's counterparts Yū and Karasu invaded Shangri'la in an attempt to rescue Haruka from Noein, whom they were all shocked to discover was an older and more powerful version of Yū who resembled an emaciated albino Karasu with longer white hair and deep, dark bags under his eyes.
Karasu decided to take Noein on alone in order to give Yū and Haruka enough time to escape and return to Hakodate, but because Noein far outclassed Karasu in terms of power, they did not make it far. When posed with the question as to why he was trying to destroy creation, Noein unveiled his past to his counterparts and Haruka.
This would eventually turn out to be a mistake on his part when Haruka and his counterparts came to the realization that by casting aside his Humanity and becoming what he was now, Noein had ceased to be the Yū Gotō of his respective Universe and was therefore nothing more than an anomaly which was not supposed to exist.
Noein was ultimately destroyed when Yū, Karasu and Haruka rejected his existence and caused his very being to destabilize. Before he died however, Noein was approached by those who had aided him in his failed scheme and chastised him for his failures.
Noein casually shrugged off their insults and told them all that he could never truly be destroyed. Noein then proclaimed that he would one day return to make his dream a reality. Noein then faded from existence leaving behind the mask he was seen wearing throughout most of the series.
