Nnoitra was created by Tite Kubo for the Bleach series, and as a foil to Kenpachi Zaraki, with whom he shares a bloodlust, but not the temperance required to truly master fighting. He exemplified the Despair aspect of Death. In his anime incarnation he is played by Nobutoshi Canna in Japanese and Michael Sinterniklaas in English. He has also appeared in Bleach: Heat the Souls 5, 6, and 7, and Bleach: Versus Crusade. In the 4th Bleach popularity poll, Nnoitra placed 24th, making him the third-highest ranked Espada in the poll. In the 5th poll, a zanpakuto based-poll, Santa Teresa placed 30th, the second most popular Espada zanpakuto under Szayel Apporo Granz's Fornicaras. In the 6th popularity poll, a "best bouts" edition, Nnoitra's battle with Kenpachi Zaraki ranked 10th.
Major Story Arcs
Nnoitra made his first appearance as a background character during the creation of Wonderweiss Magrera, but it wasn't until Aizen's Meeting of the Espada that his true character is actually established.
After Ulquiorra was tasked with guarding Orihime Inoue, Nnoitra made increasingly rude and perverted comments about his duty, even going so far as to ask how far Ulquiorra had gone in "taming her", prompting Ulquiorra to call him scum. The two then discuss Orihime's imprisonment, and the conditions that keep her pacified, rather than actively resisting Aizen.
Nnoitra's next appearance comes as a result of Chad Sado's defeat of the Privaron Espada Gantenbainne Mosqueda. Nnoitra approaches Chad mercilessly, cutting his powered-up arm in half and slashing his chest. However, Chad attempts one final blow at his opponent, and is stopped by Tesla Lindocruz, Nnoitra's Fraccion. However, Nnoitra is angered at this, saying that he never asked for him to stop the blow.
Nnoitra also observes the battle between Ichigo Kurosaki and Grimmjow Jaegerjaques. Once it seems like Ichigo is about to spare Grimmjow's life, Nnoitra attacks Grimmjow, calling him a coward. He then decides to face off against Ichigo himself. Ichigo fights valiantly, but finds himself unable to defeat Nnoitra. This prompts Nel's transformation into her old form, that of Nelliel tu Oderschvank.
Nnoitra and Nel fight long and hard, but eventually Nel transforms into her Ressurrecion mode, Gamuza. She is about to take out Nnoitra with one shot of her Lanzador Verde when she transforms back into her child form, allowing Nnoitra to gain the upper hand and kick her away. Just as he is about to crush her skull, Kenpachi Zaraki arrives, easily defeating Tesla, and the two begin to fight.
The battle is long and arduous. In the beginning, the two warriors are evenly matched, until Kenpachi stabs through Nnoitra's eye patch, thinking he has managed to find a weak spot. However, Nnoitra reveals that his eye patch is, in fact, hiding his Hollow Hole, then plunges his hand into Kenpachi's chest. Nevertheless, the two continue fighting. During the battle, Nnoitra accidentally rips off Kenpachi's eye patch, meaning that Kenpachi continues to increase in power. This prompts Nnoitra to use his Ressurrecion form, Santa Teresa. In the end, however, he is defeated when Kenpachi decides to take the battle seriously, and utilizes a swift kendo strike. In the end, Nnoitra dies with his eyes open in the midst of battle.
Powers, Abilities, and Objects
Nnoitra claims to have the strongest hierro, or a form of "steel skin" used to resist injury, amongst the Espada. Although there is no direct evidence for his claim, he was able to withstand many cuts and strikes from Kenpachi Zaraki, one of, if not the, most prolific sword users amongst the Gotei 13.
Nnoitra makes use of an advanced version of Pesquisa, or a technique used to sense spiritual pressure. While in most cases the use of Pesquisa often requires several hours of meditation and preparation beforehand, Nnoitra can make use of the technique simply by touching one finger to the ground, making a trail of spiritual pressure lead to his mark. His version of Pesquisa is also capable of revealing how much spiritual pressure his opponent has, rather than just revealingwhere they are.
Like most Arrancar, Nnoitra makes use of a Cero, or a form of beam attack. Unlike most Arrancar, Nnoitra's Cero is fired from the tip of his tongue, rather than from his arms o finger tips. It also manifests as a golden color.
Nnoitra's Zanpakuto, it stands for Praying Mantis. The zanpakuto consists of two crescent shaped blades fused to create an ax-like weapon, although it originally only consisted of one crescent blade. It is attached to Nnoitra by a long chain attached to his waist.
Nnoitra's Resurreccion is unleashed through the command Pray, Santa Teresa. In this form, Nnoitra gains two extra arms made of bone, although he can grow two more at will, and wields four scythes. He also has a pair of horns, one shorter than the other, and a golden marking going down the side of his face. In this form, he can produce more weapons made of bone from his wrists, to easily replace lost or damaged weapons, and also regenrates lost limbs and injury quickly.
In the anime, the way Nnoitra was killed is toned down. In the original manga, Kenpachi's final attack severed five of his arms and nearly cut him in half. The anime opted not to include these gory details. Apart from that, however, Nnoitra's characterization in the anime is generally the same as in the manga.
Nnoitra has been a playable character in several Bleach-related video games, with his skill set differing slightly each time.
