Welcome to Winter Watch, a look at the latest anime season. Among the many shows being broadcast, Nisemonogatari is perhaps the most anticipated one as it is a direct sequel to fan favorite Bakemonogatari.

Episode 9: Tsukihi Phoenix, Part 2

Summary: While going about his day, Koyomi meets two mysterious strangers who are more than meets the eye.

Air Date: March 3, 2012

Run Time: 24:10

Warning: This article contains spoilers. We recommend watching the episode here first.

Really?
Really?

Having lost the bet with Karen from the previous episode, this one begins with Koyomi and her heading towards Suruga's house. In the midst of this, the two meet a mysterious woman named Yoduru Kagenui who is able to sense the supernatural afflictions that the Araragi's are suffering from and is searching for the Eikou Cram School. With the aid of Tsubasa, Koyomi is able to help her and he and Karen continue on their way. After arriving at Suruga's house, Koyomi introduces her to Karen and heads home. Along the way, he encounters Mayoi and does his usual pedophile/hebephile spiel but is interrupted by an odd young girl by the name of Yotsugi Ononoki who, like Yoduru, is searching for the cram school and has the ability to sense the supernatural.

So, how do you top (and by top I mean fall even deeper into debauchery) incestuous foreplay and making out with your little sister? By devoting half an episode to fantasizing about 5th graders! Both surprisingly and thankfully the series goes here without any fanservice, but like the first encounter with Mayoi all the way back in episode 1, I'm left scratching my head about what we're supposed to take from this. Originally, I thought Araragi may have been joking around with her and after he bathed with the childlike Shinobu and didn't have any type of sexual reaction to it, I assumed I was right. However, this episode makes me think that he is a legitimate pedophile or, at the very least, has no real concept of appropriate behavior to engage in around children.

It's about time to file a missing person's report for Tsukihi.
It's about time to file a missing person's report for Tsukihi.

But enough of that. With only two episodes left, I would love to say that the Tsukihi Phoenix arc is really heating up but truth be told, they're just putting the water in the pot, let alone putting it on the stove to boil. Yoduru and Yotsugi seem like they could potentially be interesting, but with only two episodes remaining I have doubts on how much of their past or motivations we will see and how rushed things will have to be in order to both introduce a conflict and resolution that involves them. The next episode will really be the key to solidifying my feelings, but right now I get the impression that the bulk of content involving Tsukihi is going to take place off screen and both the viewers and Araragi will be left out in the cold. To liken the series to Ferris Bueller again, I believe that the viewers are going to be like Ferris' parents; a grand adventure will unfold but we will witness none of it. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing as long as the episodes themselves are entertaining, but I am bracing myself for a very anti-climatic end to Tsuki's arc... if you can even call itTsukihi's arc. We've seen more of Tsukihi in the opening song of one episode than in the actual story content of both parts combined. She had a larger presence in the first episode of Karen's arc than she has of her own arc. I haven't done a raw minutes count, but it feels like the amount of Karen that we've seen in Tsukihi's arc is creeping up on being equal to the amount of Karen we saw in her own arc, which further cements my beliefs that Nisio Isin is setting us all up for a bit of irony and playful trolling.

Verdict

I've been entertained by every episode of Nisemonogatari, including this one, but I can't give it one the praise I usually laud on the series. The push for pedo/hebephilia as a trump card for what took place last week wasn't something that I felt was needed. Even ignoring that, I didn't find the episode to be as funny as past ones and while the new characters have potential to be interesting, at this point it's just potential.

Wow....really thought you were going to be more grossed out by this from what I had heard about it. I would classify the pics you showed as fanservice. Never heard of hebephile before...where did this term come from? (don't trust wikipedia really)

@zaldar: It's basically amounts to little more than jokes made in poor taste, which are out of my comfort zone but don't bother me too much when it's all said and done. I was much more affected by the lackluster content of the episode overall than Koyomi's sexual deviancy, which was established back in episode 1 (probably all the way back in the previous series).

@sickVisionz: How did you feel about the piggyback ride discussion?

Oh Koyomi, you're such a (ghost) lolicon

@Bocam: The concept of a semi-grown ass woman walking down the street with a dude on top of her shoulders was funny and the part where he first got on her shoulders made me laugh, but the rock paper scissors bits and other parts about the scene fell flat for me.

It's worth noting that Oshino, who was mentioned as a previous tenant of the Eikou Cram School, was an important character in Bakemonogatari. He was, in vastly oversimplified terms, Koyomi's instructor/advisor in dealings with the spirits and also at least partially responsible for the situation with Koyomi and Shinobu.

@yllekkram: I figured as much. Whenever they bring him up it's always in reverence so I figured he was important and had a connection with Shinobu and Koyomi.

@sickVisionz: hmm I can't joke about such things especially when I think they show 8 year old nudity in this epsidoe right? That is what a couple places I looked implied. But yes his deviancy was established in baccano but not nearly as strongly and I could ignore it their. I did all most have to drop when they cry due to the part you mentioned elsewhere even though the series is so amazingly entertaining and creative. I only wish the animation style was better in the game (and I liked visual novels more) since we are never going to see the other parts over here.

I also wish they didn't make the cover of the boxset for it so um...bad...so people didn't look at me with raised eyes when they see it in my collection...sigh...

There is no nudity in this episode whatsoever.

Hmmm... I haven't had a problem with his relationship with Hachikuji. It might be because I've seen the first series where they met, and in particular, the scene that has since spawned him teasing her this way. This behavior was hinted at by her in a previous episode in this series. It also helps knowing that she and Shinobu aren't what they appear to be, which was also hinted at when Yotsugi called her snail. Also, it's always funny/adorable when Hachikuji stutters.

Everything about this show disgusts me.

@Vinceborg: I find that most people who haven't seen it completely blow the negatives out of proportion or have a straight up false impressions of the content within, ie Zaldar thinking there are naked 8 year olds running around. Outside of the next episode and the Shinobu scene (which was non-sexual), they never get too explicit with what they show. The sexy jutsu in Naruto, a show for little kids, has more skin showing than what you'd get in Nisemonogatari. When they get to tricky territory it's actually pretty tame, especially if you compare it to harem anime.

@sickVisionz: I agree %100. And when you consider that Bake is even tamer...

@sickVisionz: hmm the stills they showed on sankaku complex while of course meant to be inflammatory were disturbing let me find a link. No this isn't komodo no jinkin or a show about naked 8 year old vampires (vampire bund) but it gets to close to that for me from what I have read. I freely admit I may be overreacting as I am going from hersey.

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2012/03/18/nisemonogatari-ends-that-was-an-ending/ this is from episode 11 but this was fairly disturbing actually...

Episode 8 which isn't all that bad but still a little odd

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2012/02/26/nisemonogatari-oral-insertion-anime/

here we go this was the one that was really disturbing....not sure how you can say this isn't sexual...

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2012/03/04/nisemonogatari-loli-finger-insertion-anime/

I do not doubt there is a very artistic plot and animation to go along with this judging off of the first show but things like the above do turn me off and make me not interested.

As an example of real life things that disturb that are happening in America and Japan we have this...

@zaldar: It should be noted that none of the stills posted are from this episode or reference the scenes I referred to as non-sexual. In addition, everyone is fully clothed. Nisemonogatari gets a wrap as a super creepy fanservice show but compared to actual fanservice shows it's extremely mild with what it actually puts on screen. It's mostly suggestive faces or people saying things.

Post by zaldar (1,247 posts) See mini bio Level 15

hmm I think some of these are from episode nine which I thought this was. Still some involve touching and panty shots of an 8 year old. That disturbs me. But these are stills and from a site that is very much in the business of being provocative. Fans however do consider it to be a fan service show it seems. *shrug* make your own determination.

I took Araragi's contemplating of approaching Mayoi, and his explanation of his own behaviour, as a tongue-in-cheek look at trying to get into the mind of a pedophile (or really anyone that finds little girls cute). Araragi's repeated overly-affectionate remarks about how cute Mayoi can also be interpreted as a comment on the rise of moe. How, similar to Araragi, lots of people enjoy watching anime with cute girls and then try to justify themselves after the fact.

I've recently come to the conclusion that Nisemonogatari is one of the few anime that I would consider 'avant-garde'.

@AURON570: Well, the series is over with so the week to week follow through and my rule of not spoiling future events is over. Araragi is a pedo and an all around weirdo. Maybe some of the thngs he says could be considered tongue in cheek but when taken as a whole, it just another weirdo thing. Throughout the series he:

  • Talks about how he wants to see a 5th grader's panties
  • Plans to sexually stimulate his sister
  • Gets aroused by the sound of his sister moaning in pleasure
  • Talks about fondling 5th graders
  • Tries to make out and have sex with one of his sister
  • Tears off the other sister's clothes without her permission and fondles her breast

He's a weirdo. For all the good, he's a weirdo. I don't think much of his joking is tongue in cheek considering his actions. There was a time where I thought he was, but when taken as a whole he's a weirdo. Near the end Shinobu makes a joke about her letting him feel her breast and his response was something like I wish you said that when you still had your adult form and my immediate reaction was, "yeah right."

@sickVisionz: I wasn't saying that Araragi was behaving in a tongue-in-cheek manner, or that he was speaking in a tongue-in-cheek manner. But that his character is a tongue-in-cheek look at such a kind of person in real life, like pedophiles or generally anyone who thinks little girls are cute. This of course raises broader human psycho-sexual questions and issues.
