Adapted from Koji Kiriyama's 1993 Shonen Jump manga, the anime follows the adventures of the Ninku ninja clan. Since the third year of the Edo period, the clan has brought about a fragile peace through its command of esoteric martial arts, but others are constantly trying to steal their techniques and take over the country. The primary target is Fusuke Ninku, a geeky-looking kid but one of the clan's most vital members; the kidnappers hope he will give them access to its secrets. In the summer "movie" Ninku: Headstone of a Knife (1995), screened while the series was still on the air and so separate from its continuity, a gang of impostors is traveling round the country pretending to be the Ninku clan, and the real clan members have to find out what they're up to. The Ninku characters also appeared in Ninku Extra, a 35-minute video released to popularize the series.
