On an Earth still struggling to come to terms with making contact with aliens, failed college student Mayuko, forced to live in Tokyo while she retakes her exams, shares a flat with a zany alien girl (cat-ears and all) called Niea. Niea is an Under-7, one of the strange underclass of aliens that hasn't integrated into this neat near future. Made by the same studio as the surreal Serial Experiments Lain and intended as a "fantasy sitcom" by original creator Yoshitoshi Abe, NieA_7 is a gentle examination of the immigrants' plight not unlike DearS-rather than dealing with galaxy-spanning invasions or world-saving plots, the cast are more concerned with everyday life in Tokyo and how to keep their bathhouse from going bankrupt. A manga version in Ace Next magazine preceded the show, but was created as a promotional tool-it is not fair to say that NieA_7 was "based on" the Ace Next manga.
