ZETMAN #1 -- Watch & Learn

It's like a dark, scary, "mature audience" POKEMON.

Damn it if this doesn’t feel like what some far-out deconstructionist take on POKEMON would look like. What with the grim prologue about an underground society that makes monsters cockfight in a subterranean arena and everything. It’s like somebody saw that POKEPOCALYPE fan trailer from a couple years back and got hit with inspiration that steadily mutated into what's playing on my screen.

The lead even feels like an Ash Ketchum type - - through a dark lens, of course. Deconstructionists’ habit of dropping scary adult issues into all-ages-entertainment heroes’ lives would certainly be in line with the trickiness this kid encounters at the end of this episode. Look, I’m not going to focus on this topic again. I’ve already been made well-aware that social mores concerning the age of consent are different in Japan. Hell, it’s even a little touching to see this surrogate mother-son bond form between these two who’ve lost their respective loved ones…

…but it’s still freaking weird to see a grown woman bathing with a 10-year-old boy she’s picked up off the street.

I feel like this show started a while back, sometime around one of my previous attempts to keep up with fresh-over-the-ocean anime. Maybe it was a previous iteration of the series? As much I like it when shows skip over the boring set-up, this episode still felt more like a second season pick-up than a cold pilot for the number of allusions it made to assorted characters’ back stories. The intro makes it seems like it’s a KAMEN RIDER-style show so - - if I were to hazard I guess - - the premise is that some dangerous superhero’s been banished into the body of this young to a learn a THOR-style lesson in humility after his follies in the previous season. Am I warm here?

On account of that, I’m intrigued enough to check out another episode or two (if only to see if I’m right.)

Watch this episode, "Untaught Emotions” here and decide for yourself.

From what I remember from another forum, this episode jammed practically an entire manga volume into 20 minutes, which may help explain the strange pacing of this show.

Also, I think the same team that worked on Tiger & Bunny are working here, which shows some in Zet, but really shows in Alphas (especially when compared to Sky High).

Masakazu Katsura, Zetman creator was the one behind the concept and character design of Tiger and Bunny,it's two main characters are loosely based on Kouga and Jin from Zetman.

From what i've seen they pretty much adapt one volume per episode, leaving some of the story out, rushing the plot perhaps in an atempt to reach definite conclusion different from the manga. It's nowhere near a good adaptation but it's watchable nonetheless.

That comparison to pokemon is kind of absurd, if not only for the reason that every "creature" in Zetman is a modified human or mutant, they are born that way and develop their powers while growing.

Since the beggining of the manga is clearly layed out that the main issue of the series is the definition of Justice by the two main character and the development they go through believing in their own ideals.

This is what I've heard. Even so, those who haven't read the manga (myself included) can watch this show and enjoy it. I plan to find the manga after the show is over and see what I/it missed out on.

I deconstructionist pokemon sounds oddly interesting...and don't feel bad talking about the oddity of the trickiness. Getting used to the sexual mores in Japan would not be a good thing to my mind.
