Zac Efron is...Sousuke?

It's just not the same!

So, you guys know my long-running joke that Zac Efron is Kira, due to his easy physical similarities with the anime character (if any human can be said to look like an anime character, anyway). So imagine my shock when I found out that Zac Efron really is considering taking an anime character role on!

...But not the one that would have made me shit a brick. No, word is that Mandalay Pictures (the company behind, for example, 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer; 1999's Sleepy Hollow; 2001's Enemy at the Gates; etc) has acquired the film license to, of all things, Full Metal Panic. And Efron is considering taking on a role in the project. My instinct, of course, is to guess that the role in question is the lead, Sousuke Sagara, and I guess I can kind of see the possibility for resemblence.

But it's just not the same...What say you, gentle readers?

OH GOD STAY THE F*CK AWAY ZAC. I don't want him involved or a crappy live action movie. ;_; I want season 4!

*Shakes head in despair* ...great, this is just what I needed to read about..
and of course this means that they would get Vanessa Hudgens to play the role of Chidori...>__>

I figured they was gonna make a sh*tty musical out of the anime when I saw the title of this news.

No, no, no, silly readers, he's going to play Shinji, Sousuke's friend. Personally I think he looks a lot more like him than Sousuke, cept you'd have to give him glasses...woohoo.

Wait a second....

Holy...

They're making an FMP live action????
Are they serious???
Ok, to heck with dragonball and Cowboy Bebop, if whoever does this messes THIS one up I will PERSONALLY track down every major producer of the studio and MAKE them cancel it. That said, if they do a good job, well... I'll definitely be sure to show it to everyone I know :D That article linked though has me nervous since apparently they think there aren't any adults in the FMP universe.......what about nearly ALL of the officers?? The only officer that's a kid is Teletha, and she's the only one!
Schwindelmagieron April 7, 2009 at 10:25 a.m.
Heero: I'm with you on this one. I've pretty much had it with these live action adaptations. However, I guess we'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is... if you set aside actors for a moment, this really isn't such a bad idea. The story of FMP - young-ish male undercover agent has to protect an attractive, outgoing and somewhat bossy female high school student - is one that transplants to America very easily (hell, it's why the series is so respected here to start with). The robot action generally doesn't get too crazy unless they throw in the Arbalest, and Wacky High School Hijinx are something everyone can understand.

So on the face of it, I'm not too hostile to this idea, because unlike some attempts like Dragonball there's a certain logic at play here. Zac Efron, though... I'd hope he isn't Sousuke. Ideally someone of middle eastern descent should be Sousuke, although I can bet that Kaname will be made a caucasian and the producers probably don't want to "stir the pot" by daring to insinuate that a white person and an arab (!!!!!) can possibly have feelings for one another.

Still, cautiously optimistic for this one.

Not a problem.
core1065on April 7, 2009 at 3:25 p.m.
Ummm...... Isnt Sousuke Japanese, who is Muslim? Not a white dude.
HeeroYuyon April 7, 2009 at 4:35 p.m.
@SpaceDrake: That's actually part of why I was strangely somewhat impressed with their choosing this show. It seems like it would suit American audiences rather well as it is, so so long as they don't F*** IT UP then it could actually be a really good blockbuster.

As for Sousuke's role, I'd have to say I really don't care so much who they pick so long as they look remotely like Sosuke (in that matter Zac Efron is ok) and they seem like they could pull off Sousuke's serious yet strangely silly attitude (that's where I can't see Zac Efron fitting the role at all). If only Jason Statham was younger....lol.

Zac Efron has has that built-in tween fanbase. Naturally, the producers are going to blow up his agent's voicemail and hope he takes the gig.

SpaceDrake's on the money. Full Metal Panic is probably one of the few high-concept anime series that can be "Americanized" and still retain a lot of its core themes.

For example, MITHRIL's membership is composed of a number of different nationalities; AFAIK, Sousuke Sagara is the only major member of Japanese descent. The series' action takes place everywhere from Helmajistan/Afganistan to Hong Kong. In other words, the show is pretty international already. Also, throw in a pretty teenage captain of an ultra-futurastic submarine and, yeah, I can see how this was packaged and sold to Hollywood.

For now, let's just [begrudgingly] accept Zac Efron's attachment and start drafting wishlists/pipe-dreams for the Tessa, Melissa, Kaname, Kurz, Kalinin and Mardukas roles. The idea is to surround Efron with strong talent. Who do you see playing Kalinin?

One remaining thought I have is: how far will the film producers go to adapt Sousuke's penchant for bringing live firearms to school? I just can't see that translating well, when the setting is likely shifted to an American HS.
kiroshimatsuon April 8, 2009 at 12:34 a.m.
He seems more of a Raito than a Sasuke... *sad face*

The idea seems interesting though..
HeeroYuyon April 8, 2009 at 12:56 a.m.
Sean Connery or Steven Segal with his hair dyed grey (he's got he perfect expression you have to admit) as Kalinin. Daniel Craig or Gene Hackman as Mardukas. If Owen Wilson was younger he could've done Kurz...
I have no clue who could do Mao though...

As for Kaname, long hair or blue hair, doesn't have to be both, just at least one is all I ask!
darkjester74on April 8, 2009 at 9:58 a.m.
FMP just isnt the same without Chris and Luci's voices.  =(
MissPandaon April 8, 2009 at 11:05 a.m.
