Zac Efron: Death Note 'Not On Frontburner,' 'Had a Meeting'

Zac Efron really may be Kira o_o

As you guys know, I am a major proponent of the idea that DIsney's current tween dream Zac Efron looks a heck of a lot like Death Note's Light Yagami/Kira, and why the heck not give the boy a chance to play a darker role in the reported Hollywood adaptation of the franchise? I've campaigned once or twice on the matter, and fans tend to respond one of several ways.

1. "NO WAY! Anything little girls like that much has got to suck! I would not stand for that man in my Death Note!"
2. "Ohmigod, he's so dreamy. DO IT! DO IT!"
3. "NO WAI ZAK EFFRON IZ 2 SWEET 2 DO WHAT LITE DOES!!!"
4. "I do not care about this at all."
5. "Yes. For the LULZ!"

Now, I have seen a lot of people saying that it's "rumored" that he's involved or outright that he's been cast, which I always guessed was just people misreading others' articles (I'm not the only Zac Efron is Kira-ite out there), but Efron himself was asked about it in this video (at about the 3:35-40ish mark), and what did he say?

"I Love Death Note and we were kinda working on it right now...it's definitely not something that would be coming up soon...It's not on the front-burner. It's something that was...I feel like regardless, no matter what I say now, it's going to be the next movie. It was an idea, and who knows...I had a meeting on it."

Wow. Guess it's more plausible than even I had thought...

I think the Japanese live action movies had a great cast, why not just get them to do it again? Only this time follow the anime more closely and not just use it as a jump off point for a completely different movie. To be honest the series has way to much build up to ever be properly made into a movie, that is why i wish they would do a mini-series like HBO does.

@crusader8463: Oohh, I would totally watch an HBO Death Note miniseries!

That said, I think it'd be pretty tough to make Kenichi Matsuyama and Tatsuya Fujiwara learn English on top of everything else ^^;
crusader8463on Nov. 23, 2009 at 2:21 p.m.
@gia: I know it would never happen but why not just sub it?
giaon Nov. 23, 2009 at 3:04 p.m.
@crusader8463: VIZ Pictures IS releasing a translated (subtitled) version of the original Japanese movies, but that's only going to be popular with the  manga crowd and, at best, some of the indie/international crowd-- it'll never reach the mainstream. So Warner Bros. wants to make a version of the film that will actually be feasible for a wide theatrical release to turn the brand into something outside just the core anime/manga fans.

From a business perspective, it's sort of the obvious decision, but we'll have to see if they actually turn out a good movie with it or not.

does this mean efron is one of Us?
giaon Nov. 23, 2009 at 3:34 p.m.
@rein: Hard to say, but I wondered myself! On the other hand, Samuel L. Jackson is a geek who loves Black Lagoon and even voiced Afro Samurai, but he's not really "one of us" either, since he's Samuel motha-f!@#in' Jackson. ;)

If Zac Efron was in a Death Note movie I would not watch it. I might not watch it anyways because I feel it could ruin the show for me. I still haven't seen the Dragon Ball movie either.
Superevil225on Nov. 23, 2009 at 9:08 p.m.
I don't really care which actor does Light... I mean if it's good, who cares? But the thing is Death Note is for older teen Anime fans, but Zac Efron apeals to the 10 year olds. What's gunna happen if tons of fan girls start watching/reading Death Note, just because Zac Efron was in the movie... Conventions will be hell and comic book stores will no longer be safe!

I think Efron is one of us! :O

@gia: NUMBER 5 is my answer

@Superevil225:
don't worry about the comic book yet, worry about the PTA
giaon Nov. 24, 2009 at 8:20 a.m.
@Superevil225: I've already survived a Comic-Con with Twilight-- once they shifted the schedule slightly so that Twilight was FIRST instead of after other things that the fangirls would happily sit through to ensure attendance at the T-light thing, it was pretty easy. And since anime is a relatively fangirl-heavy fandom to begin with (relative to, say, video games and comic books, anyway), I think we'd survive an onslaught, as it were :)

I can't say I would have thought of this myself, but I can see it. It would definitely be interesting, at least.

I hate alot of you anime fans you are so closed minded. I think Efron would be PERFECT for Light. Just because he was in high school musical doesn't mean he wouldn't work in a death note movie.
