YU YU HAKUSHO #55 - Watch & Learn

Watch out for this sexy man!

We ought to set up a poll somewhere in the forums…

Is a villain more fearsome when he poses an additional, sexual threat?

Funi plays it safe and coy in this dub. They don’t come out and say that Kurama’s gay, nor do they have Karasu explicitly state that he’d rather hook up with the fox dude than pummel him… but c’mon, it’s all pretty obvious. And it does add a different level of danger to this brawl (different from the dozens of others, certainly.) For as big and scary an adversary as Toguro’s been to Yusuke’s, there’s never been the possibility of him maybe wanting to molest the guy after he kicks the crap out of him. Such a threat comes up far more often in the heroine shows, certainly, but it's something of a novelty here.

On another note, I’ve got to say that the image of Kurama directing a torrent of razor-sharp rose petals at Karasu, and Karasu then popping all those petals out of the air like little balloons, had to be one of the most absurd images I’ve seen throughout the lengthy course of this show. Understand, I’m saying this after I didn’t snicker at all when Kurasu was throwing his little warheads at Kurama

Honestly, it's been overall pretty creative how they played Kurama’s “flower power” out with him enveloping the ring in some overflowing plant monster. But such a concept is delicate - - one that can look silly far more often than it can look cool - - and the show fumbled it pretty damn hilariously in that instance.

Look up this episode, "The Beast Within" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Now that you mention it I'm actually thinking that Bleach borrowed Bits of Kurama's fox character for kuchiki byakuya. The sternness, the razor petals, the willingness to do the inconceivable at a minutes notice if its the logical course of action, the look of being pissed off the entire time but also looking like you're modeling for abercrombie's feudal Japan line up.

I disagree. Byakuya reads more like Hiei to me. Kurama was too friendly to have much in common with him :P

Karasu is cool despite his strange interaction with Kurama.

The flower motif was probably inspired but Byakuya's personality was did not come from here.

I agree, hints why I said the Fox version. Also, Hiei is far to talkative to be an inspiration for Byakuya. His wolf form is uncanny, and even had Hiei fearful.

Hiei? Talkative? Are we watching the same show?

Kurama is far more vocal than Hiei, and Hiei's temperament is much closer to Byakuya's.

Not that any of this matters in the slightest :p

@AgentJ:

Well, Kurama's demon self barely speaks, and Hiei comes across more like a tempered Vegeta later in the series than a Byakuya. We all remember the endless amount of bragging he displayed with the dark dragon, and the fact that he's a sore loser, sure at first he's mister silent, but that part of his character begins to degrade as the series continues, by the end of the Dark Saga he might as well be Vegeta or a less intelligent Uryu especially with the mimicked hatred and competition between them and the main protagonist. Not to mention that even Hiei was afraid of Kurama, Byakuya's far to high browed to fear anyone.

Not to sound argumentative or like I'm attacking or anything, but I've watched this series far to many times to see Hiei as such a character. In the series when it comes to the punch he is cold, manipulative, and calculating when it comes to his life against his opponents. When it comes to a close comparison Yoko Kurama(even if you look later on, time line wise, with his merge with Shuichi Minamino) is much closer to Byakuya. If Byakuya were real he would probably be irritated if someone were to compare him anyone else('Shuichi Minamino-Kurama' to a far less extent).

@Top8cat: You seem to forget how self-confident and cocky Byakuya has been, especially before fighting Ichigo. Kurama has never said a positive thing about his own abilities, but Byakuya and Hiei share a certain belief in what they can do.
