YU YU HAKUSHO #18 -- Watch & Learn

Sometimes, you just have to let the hero wreck your villain.

Foreground? Mid-ground. Background!

As much as you’re supposed to pit your heroes against stronger foes they can only defeat through much grit and struggle, there’s something to be said about just cutting loose sometimes and letting one of your leads just trounce a bad guy without much effort. From another angle, I suppose it works out that we’d have this mini-boss taken out in less than an episode's length after the last took three odd episodes to defeat (and he still came back in this one like some blue furred terminator.)

Of course, it wouldn’t be a fight procedural if Hiei simply just wrecked the dude. We’ve got to go back over the instant replay (sadly missing John Madden’s charming white scribbles) and then see, in slow motion, just how many blows he delivered in that blink of an eye.

Served haughty lord Byakko right. He had it coming.

Now that we’ve gotten to see this quartet working together for more than a few episodes, I’ve got to say that their team interplay has been growing on me. I don’t know if the personality types break down that neatly into the boxes that are usually labeled “the serious one” or “the funny one,” but there is a clear enough delineation in how these guys act and speak in any given scenario. I’ve also been enjoying how the Saint monsters regard these demons, animal spirits and regular human punks differently. It fosters at the least the air of a mythos in a show that hasn’t used much breath trying to explain or define its world.

Man, maybe my perspective’s biased, but the last Saint monster’s servant specifically identifying Keiko as Yusuke’s weakness is a tactic ripped straight out of the supervillain’s handbook. I brought up a while back how Yusuke’s basically a superhero without a costume or a secret identity, and his indiscretion regarding the latter is coming around to bite him right here. I suppose he’s going to have a hard time keeping the spirit world secret from Keiko after she’s kidnaped and/or threatened by these beasts.

Look up this episode, "Byakko's Lair" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

I don't really like the next fight. But that's okay, because after Suzaku, there's only escalation in the quality until at least, episode 93, 94... In my opinion, of course.

Yeah, I'm pretty confident that this upcoming fight is the last time that the villain is so mustache-twirling(ly) evil.

It cannot be emphasized enough just how big Kurama and Hiei were with the anime-loving girls of the early 2000s. They were rockstars. Binders full of amateur near-yaoi fanart were everywhere. Indeed, Yu Yu Hakusho enjoyed a larger female following than perhaps any shonen series in history.

Yeah. I can definitely see that. They're pretty boys.
