Yoshitoshi ABe is DESPERAte

Yeah, I know, not my best headline ever.

I know some word of this hit the 'net before, but an official announcement of the new anime Despera, featuring character concept work from Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain character design, Welcome to the NHK novel illustrations, and a wide variety of other things you should be familiar with) has hit the 'net.

Despera will also feature as its series director Ryuutarou Nakamura, the director of Kino no Tabi and Ghost Hound, among other things (he also did art on my first anime ever, Unico). The wirter attached to the project is Chiaki J. Konaka, who also worked on Lain and Ghost Hound, as well as Princess Tutu and Hellsing.

As for the story, it's an alternative history story set in 1922 Tokyo (that would be the Taishou era, for you Japanese history majors) and revolves around a teenage girl named Ain, who is able to build strange machines without any particular scientific background.

Sounds kind of cute.
