YAMADA'S FIRST TIME - - Watch & Learn

As tricky as the title sounds, but still entertaining, actually.

Gee - - wonder what this is about?
Gee - - wonder what this is about?

Change of pace, lunatics. We’ll be taking a break from EUREKA SEVEN and YU YU HAKUSHO for a week or so to catch up with a number of fine, new Funimation titles that have come to my doorstep. Read my thoughts on…

* SENGOKU BASARA: SAMURAI KINGS

Look, you’d be have to be hopelessly dense for a show titled YAMADA’S FIRST TIME to ever surprise you when it gets tricky - - the synopsis is laid right out on the packaging. See, this 15-year-old chick’s aiming to end her virginity with a 21 cannon salute by sleeping with no less than a hundred guys. It’s basically like a shonen where the hero’s on a quest to defeat a horde of villains, but the fighting’s swapped out for freakin’. One easily can figure that Yamada will learn all sorts of abilities throughout the course of this saga, and possibly even reach progressively higher levels of sexual Super Saiyan.

As was the case with that other notably tricky mainstream show, VAMPIRE BUND, I took a deep breath when I popped this disc into my XBOX, held my breath as the show started rolling and was then able to slowly exhale in relief as the show proved to be working extra hard to be entertaining in spite of the grosser stuff. This is actually a lot like FLCL in the speediness of dialogue, the cleverness of the abstraction and the density of sheer visual information being thrown at you. It puts a show like SHIN CHAN to shame for how much more skillfully it’s able to pull off the machine gun gag style. Even if you’re not laughing at every joke, you’re at least constantly entertained by the exuberant storytelling. If I wasn’t a guy in his 20s, I’d recommend it.

But it is tricky. That can't be stressed enough. It's definitional tricky. As in this episode starts with Yamada shaving her pubic hair, builds conflict with her trying to get felt up in the middle of the school library and then features enough panty shots of her that you eventually start taking them for granted. And all of that while she’s repeatedly stressed to be 15.

That makes it...

There’s a fair argument that this isn't any less appropriate than child assassin shows like GUNSLINGER GIRL. And there's a chance that the show may play the reliable high school sex com shell game by having Yamada never actually follow through on her scheme. She could very likely learn that she isn’t anywhere close to the kind of maneater she’s trying to be. To whit, her courtship with the “cherry boy” in this episode is actually rather sweet. But I know I can’t stick around to find out if that’ll play out - - not when I’m watching something that gives me the persistent anxiety that the feds may bust into my apartment at any moment and seize it.

Watch this episode, "Boy Meets Girl, Let Me Have Your First Time" below and decide for yourself.

@buhssuht: It's funny. If you look into it, most of the really dirty manga are. I think gia ad written an article on it back wen she was a mod.

As I noted in the ANN forums a few days ago, I'm quite surprised that this series has been getting solid feedback from online reviewers, especially as I'm not the biggest fan of the ecchi genre and would only watch said titles if it is to give me the opportunity to rip them apart in an Ani-Crap review. Hearing that something like B Gata H Kei is actually a solid watch has me confused if I should bother getting it for my collection as I live with my parents right now and I'm hesitant at having them know of the more sketchy sides to the anime/ manga fandom.

If you say it's funny, then I'll believe you, but the flying boobs in the title shot and the notion of panty shots every twenty seconds has me vehemently deterred.

Maybe I'll watch an episode with my girlfriend.

yeaaa.... sengoku was cool.... but im good on this one......

you should try Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, (preferably the english dub if you can find it) , that show is a riot XD

This show was a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, especially when it turned out that Yamada spends most of the series just trying to convince herself to get with one "normal" guy while putting up a front for everyone else's sake. The various teen romances that pop up in the story are more funny and awkward than perverted, but I don't think I could convince myself to watch this again.

Also, the manga ended a few months ago. In a surprising twist Kosuda and Yamada actually got busy with each other! How often does that happen in manga?

Believe it or not, despite the panty-shots, this anime is kind of sweet, and hopefully a deterrent for young schoolgirls turning into sluts, that's kind of the whole lesson... Not sure why they decided to fill it with fan service when honestly the story and characters seem to be oriented towards a young female demographic...

"And there's a chance that the show may play the reliable high school sex com shell game by having Yamada never actually follow through on her scheme. This sounds awful. Having watched quite a few anime this can't be anything but 12 episodes of blue balls with goofy "will they, or won't they" hijinks concentrating on one guy. Forget about the 100 dudes limit, I doubt one will be reached. I hated that shit in Ranma 1/2, continued hating it in the 15 years since and I still do so today.

Please also tell me she's tsundere so I can extra avoid it.

As a part time social studies and history teacher I just want to say that teenagers know more about sex than people give them credit for. Take this horror story that a co-worked told me once. This student approaches him and says he wants to talk to him about a problem he has, and of course he told the student to go ahead. Well the student starts to unbutton his pants much to his horror and asks him to look at a blister on his penis.

After informing the student to pull his pants back up and that he wasn't a licensed medical professional he takes the students to "The Medical Ward for Venereal Diseases," much to the humiliation of the student and teacher. When they get there there's another female there about the same age as the student, and no joke, he starts to hit on her. The teacher kind of went berserk and asks him what the hell he was doing and the male student, without hesitating, said:

"Well if she's here she must put out."

Horrified he asks the female student why he's letting him do this to her and also without hesitation says:

"Well if he's getting checked he must have experience."

I think simply labeling this series as tricky and moving along does a disservice to it and others who might be scared off thinking she's going to bang her way through high school. The series could do without panty shots that don't serve the plot.

zaldaron Feb. 16, 2012 at 6:01 p.m.

The trickiness though comes in the panty shots and sexualization of a 15 year old girl. Yes students know a lot about sex but that doesn't mean we should perpetuate it. And we should be especially warry of sexualizing a teenage girly to adults.

still the fact that she is 15 and not say 8 makes it a little better I suppose.

"tricky but entertaining" And so your journey down the darkside begins.

Never watched this, I will and will give it a chance, who knows based on the review and comments I may like it at some level

I just can't help imagining Jeff Gerstman writing this.

PenguinDuston Feb. 17, 2012 at 1:32 a.m.

It's actually a very sweet series about first love and the crazy emotions that go along with it. Sex may be one of the myriad of subjects in the series, but it's never marginalized or treated as something meaningless, at least not as the story unfolds. It might be "tricky" for some but much much less so than American films like American Pie, Risky Business and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Hell, there was even a child rape joke at the end of Animal House, but of course, the fed aren't busting down people's doors for that. I guess it's only "tricky" when it's a cartoon.

nivion Feb. 28, 2012 at 2:01 a.m.

Tom: Fantastic read, and fuck you for making me wanting to watch this show.

Daniel_Newton moderator on July 15, 2013 at 4:07 p.m.

I just started watching this series and it's definitely a lot of fun. I get the distinct impression that it will quickly turn into a love story between Yamada and the "cherry boy" and, like you said, Yamada will realize that she isn't half the man-eater she's trying to be.

Good dub, too. Which shouldn't be surprising, since it's a FUNimation release. I watch anime with subtitles 95% of the time but it's nice to take a break from that sometimes.
