Change of pace, lunatics. We’ll be taking a break from EUREKA SEVEN and YU YU HAKUSHO for a week or so to catch up with a number of fine, new Funimation titles that have come to my doorstep. Read my thoughts on…
Look, you’d be have to be hopelessly dense for a show titled YAMADA’S FIRST TIME to ever surprise you when it gets tricky - - the synopsis is laid right out on the packaging. See, this 15-year-old chick’s aiming to end her virginity with a 21 cannon salute by sleeping with no less than a hundred guys. It’s basically like a shonen where the hero’s on a quest to defeat a horde of villains, but the fighting’s swapped out for freakin’. One easily can figure that Yamada will learn all sorts of abilities throughout the course of this saga, and possibly even reach progressively higher levels of sexual Super Saiyan.
As was the case with that other notably tricky mainstream show, VAMPIRE BUND, I took a deep breath when I popped this disc into my XBOX, held my breath as the show started rolling and was then able to slowly exhale in relief as the show proved to be working extra hard to be entertaining in spite of the grosser stuff. This is actually a lot like FLCL in the speediness of dialogue, the cleverness of the abstraction and the density of sheer visual information being thrown at you. It puts a show like SHIN CHAN to shame for how much more skillfully it’s able to pull off the machine gun gag style. Even if you’re not laughing at every joke, you’re at least constantly entertained by the exuberant storytelling. If I wasn’t a guy in his 20s, I’d recommend it.
But it is tricky. That can't be stressed enough. It's definitional tricky. As in this episode starts with Yamada shaving her pubic hair, builds conflict with her trying to get felt up in the middle of the school library and then features enough panty shots of her that you eventually start taking them for granted. And all of that while she’s repeatedly stressed to be 15.
That makes it...
There’s a fair argument that this isn't any less appropriate than child assassin shows like GUNSLINGER GIRL. And there's a chance that the show may play the reliable high school sex com shell game by having Yamada never actually follow through on her scheme. She could very likely learn that she isn’t anywhere close to the kind of maneater she’s trying to be. To whit, her courtship with the “cherry boy” in this episode is actually rather sweet. But I know I can’t stick around to find out if that’ll play out - - not when I’m watching something that gives me the persistent anxiety that the feds may bust into my apartment at any moment and seize it.
