XION SAGA - DT #1 - - Special Review

What's the equivalent of the "rage quit" in anime?

Previously, I’ve invoked the rather handy Wolpaw’s Law for the times when I’ve gotten halfway through a pilot and deemed that to be enough viewing time to understand what I disliked about the show. Since the term arose for video game reviews, I think it’d be appropriate to coin something additional here that could correspond to the “rage quit” in gaming.

It would be for the instances where you not only feel compelled to drop out early, but also frustrated enough with the show that you want to chuck your laptop at the wall.

I’m trying to sample as many current series as I can for these special reviews. And, at this point, if anybody at a party ever casually asked me about what’s currently popular in anime, I would furrow my brow a bit, groan a little, and begrudgingly admit that it’s “MMO’s getting’ real.” It might be followed by a little sigh as I wistfully pined for the days when amnesiac child assassins seemed like the worst trope to be found in this arena.

As I’ve said repeatedly, this is a yet-to-be-properly-named sub-genre of sword & sorcery which every third or fourth pilot seems to fall under, lately. Why do these irk me so? Well, the disenchantment is on two levels...

First, these shows are paying homage to a genre of sword & sorcery storytelling that's usually concocted by people without much knowledge of sword & sorcery fiction; let alone the real history that inspired that fiction.

Then, these shows take the already-drab experience of watching somebody else play a video game and make it even less exciting by taking away any remaining shred of interactivity. The experience winds up as unprofound as listening to somebody read aloud an argument from the talkback of a YouTube video showing somebody else's walk-through of one of these aforementioned games.

So, how does XION SAGA – DT differentiate itself from the other bugs in this particular nest? Well, instead of linking to the game, the main character literally drops into the world of his favorite MMO, rolling chair and all. So, there you go…

…and there I went.

Watch this episode, "DT” here and decide for yourself.

When did this kind of anime become popular? I should really try to catch up with my anime (I still at last summers)

Here one "Elvis Rage Quit"

I have never seen one these shows' before, though I agree the premise sounds a bit stupid, sounds a bit like the Tron movies which I really despise,

on the other hand I never had a problem with the amnesiac child assassin stuff either,

I completly admit that as anime I don't like these (though I would love to know what you mean by sword and sorcery storytelling and some of it that you like) but I can actually get into watching someone else play a video game...especially the endurance runs over on giant bomb..they are pretty hilarious.

I gave this show every shot.Tried to find something to like. Came up nuth'n.Not sure who its aimed at but the rest of us is caught in its friendly fire. Tom Pinchuk instinct here is spot on.Yes i belive he would have really done a Elvis Rage Quit after seeing its "ball crushing humor" .

Tried till 4 or 5 an it just was not for me. Kept reading coments about how funny it was.All the game jokes in it.Then i begin to wonder again who this was aimed at. Sword Art Online has a decent story an good to great animation. .hack//SIGN was even better than this show.Which is 2002 so the MMORPG just got real trope has been around a while.

Sainglain is the only character i could posibly like but i think thats because the voice actor Kazuya Nakai who does the voice of Roronoa Zoro

I say you should try http://www.hulu.com/#!blast-of-tempest 1st season was good.Animation wise even great.

Maybe it's that we're close to the Super Bowl, but I don't think that this was a drop, but rather a "spike". Terrible.

Marshal Victoryon Jan. 21, 2013 at 11:05 p.m.

Kazuya Nakai also does the main characters voice in .....

http://www.crunchyroll.com/bakumatsu-gijinden-roman

which is another show that should be looked at. Monkey Punch did the character designs .Also if warner brothers does not sue about episode 3 id be shocked. Its a subtle head nod to whats said about Fujiko Mine .Sutble like a sledge hammer.

Its actualy based off of CR Ginroku Gijinden Roman pachinko game.I dare say if your in the right mood its dam grovy weird good.

ComicMan24on Jan. 22, 2013 at 1:13 a.m.

I actually like this show. Sure it is silly as hell but it does get really funny at times.

Marshal Victoryon Jan. 22, 2013 at 1:49 a.m.

@ComicMan24: It had its moments ill give ya that. Its just not for me.Judging by your have watch list id say wed probly like the same shows more often than not.Its just one of those shows i think those who like it really really like it an those that dont really really dont.

ComicMan24on Jan. 22, 2013 at 1:53 a.m.

@Marshal Victory: I can understand why people don't like it. Sure it can be a below average anime at times but it makes me laugh and I can appreciate that in it.

I understand your reasoning for not liking these types of shows (fantasy based on MMO rules) Tom, but I still don't "get" it. Are you saying that its just too diluted of an homage for your taste? And if the anime is done well then why does it matter?

I'm a big on creators actually understanding the topic they're handling. And this sub-genre just generally reeks of people basing a fantasy series off of the experience they've had playing a fantasy video game, which was probably based on the programmers' experience playing a tabletop RPG, which was in turn probably based on a fantasy novel that was half-read by the game masters... and so on and so on, like a game of creative inspiration telephone. It's not inspired by real-world experiences, or folk lore, or mythology, or history - - it's based on second, third, or fourth hand experiences instead of real inspiration.

Execution some times can help (SUMMER WARS), but I've been watching so many of these that I've developed a set of fairly reliable warning flags. Keep in mind that RECORD OF LODOSS WAR was the first anime I quit out of boredom. If that felt like derivative fantasy to me, then this feels like several generations of derivation.

Marshal Victoryon Jan. 23, 2013 at 6:13 p.m.

@No_name_here: For those here who dont know the anime Record of Lodoss War .It was based off of dungeons & dragons rpg table top session that was transcripted .An for the record so to speek i have made 2 atempts to watch this series.Alsways find something else to watch.

Its one of those i want to like this but it feels off.Think becuase of the dubs maybe.Hmm just found it on dvd maybe if can swing it next month will get it an see if subs help. Some series its a world of difrence.
