WTF Wednesday: I Thought Watchmen was Fiction

Superhero? For real?

This
isn't just some cosplay-- this man calls himself Shadowhare, wears a mask and a cape (NEVER WEAR A CAPE!), conceals his identity, and attempts to fight crime and injustice-- via all the legal routes, mind, pepper spray, legal weapons, carrying out citizen's arrests, etc.

The young man in question is 21 years old and from Milford, though he won't share anything else about his present life-- he does claim to have been abused as a child and that he grew up in foster homes, which may have resulted in his desire to help others.

And Shadowhare isn't the only masked hero working these days: he's head of an organization calling itself the “Allegiance of Heroes,” which includes several men and one woman who are working under such names as “Aclyptico” (Pennsylvania), “Wall Creeper” (Colorado), and “Master Legend” (Florida).

"I've even teamed up with Mr. Extreme in California -- San Diego -- and we were trying to track down a rapist," said Shadowhare.

...I can't help but feel this is some kind of super-belated April Fools joke, or prank, but if not? Wow.

I love hearing about real life masked vigilantes, but it is somewhat depressing that they can't be like the heroes of comics. They'd either get themselves killed or arrested. Oh well. Guess we just have to wait for the advent of super powers or for some rich kid to step up.

I hope that someday the world ends up like in Heroes, though it may never happen. ><
