I know that OKAMI-SAN based many of its characters from fairy-tales from both Western and Japanese folklore. All the characters from the series were roughly based from fairy-tales, then jumbled together. I sort of compared it to the anime version of SHREK.

Much of the Fish-Man Island arc from ONE PIECE was taking themes from the TALE OF URASHIMA TARO, an ancient Japanese folktale. However, many of the events were an allegory about racial prejudice. You might not have caught that since you came into that arc so late, Tom. I could even draw comparisons between two of the characters from that arc and two American civil rights leaders.

Found my self noding alot watching this. An yes while watching One Piece at 1st it give a aura of many great epic childrens tales.Just has that fantasy fable set up at first that draws you in for least 1st 100 episodes.

Would any of my past teachers aprove of anime ? As a Art form .. no.But then again they could not argue art is just opion with fewer letters. Some would be hung up on comics even .When The Sandman: The Dream Hunters was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Related Book in 2000. One i swear would have had a cow ,if it wasnt so trendy at the time to say not to.Then again those that can do,those that can't teach.

Kinda dig the "well of inspreation" ideal there.Almost visualise it as if i throw this book an that film into the well what would those waters taste like?

Good vid.. err other than the intro.Unplugged writen on tp eh?

Gankutsuou (based on The Count of Monte Cristo) is pretty terrific.

Turambaron June 11, 2013 at 4:18 p.m.

As an actual teacher, why yes, I do approve of anime.

Marshal Victoryon June 11, 2013 at 4:49 p.m.

@Turambar: What do ya teach if i may ask? One of few good teachers i ever had said "a good teacher is willing to learn".Most of those who had that title were ridgid by the book an sadly no thought beyond the book.

@AgentJ: wasn't Castle of Cagliostro too?

Anyway, I i showed my Teachers Wolfs Rain they'd think highly of it, Actually it's pretty much a good modern fairy tale that uses quite a few troupes and cues.

If i showed them Excel Saga, they'd put it next to Spongebob (which i like).

Marshal Victoryon June 11, 2013 at 8:57 p.m.

@Turambar: Wow nice . One of my few favorite teachers was a history teacher. He would explain to his classes that he had to teach from this book .But this book is not always right or acurate. He would challenge them to read further an from varied sources.Even to the point that if they could prove from other sources their answer was right he would give them extra credit for the class.Cant say he would or would not like anime tho.like to think he would especialy the more adult sci fi stuff.

Had a few professors in college with familiarity in knowing anime. In particular, I submitted a paper covering the history and themes of Studio Ghibli films for an Intro to Film course and used a few anime films I owned to cover different camera and narrative techniques used in film.

Kuma_From_Argentinaon June 12, 2013 at 5:53 a.m.

The Count of Montecristo is good. Most of Ghibli movies.

Killer_of_trollson June 12, 2013 at 6:03 a.m.

Actually, one of my university lecturers loves anime. Get with the times, Comics are being taught academically now. I've written a few essays on anime for his course, all over 90. So my answer is "Yes".

So is Sam Weller out of commission permanently...could you just no longer stand his love of Ghost in the Shell (which does work the philosophy into its story, though the manga does a better job of it than the anime)? The interplay you to had was always great.
