WIZARD BARRISTERS Should be A Whole Lot Weirder -- Review

Ep. 1 -- Special Review. And no, purple hair isn't weird enough.

This premise sounded quite lame when Matt brought it up on the Pit a while back. Awkwardly smooshing loud genre elements into a boring, clerical field might as well be an anime cliché, by now; and "SORCERY + LAW" here seemed like no exception. However, this show keeps popping up on CrunchyRoll’s list of most popular shows - - as if by magic! - - so commenting on it nevertheless seemed in order.

Sure, my hunch proved right, but I’m not as quick to dog on WIZARD BARRISTERS, because the presentation is just that appealing. Here’s another show this season that gets pretty far along on just the strength of the art. Designs, colors, outfits, textures, lighting and - - lest we undervalue it - - camera direction all make this quite enjoyable to watch, moment to moment. Hell, it’s one of the few times where I’ve actually thought, “Wow… the set design for the conference room in this scene is really cool.”

However, while I wouldn’t write it off as eye-candy, I honestly can’t remember a lot of specifics about the story as I type this. It’s as if the plot details just slid off my brain, like so much condensation on the side of witch’s cauldron.

We’d maybe have to sacrifice our winsome lead and her cute purple pigtails (and a lot of audience eyeballs, probably) but if I were to put on my fantasy programming director’s hat, my note would be that the show would benefit from being more like MUSHI-SHI. Quieter. Headier. More atmosophere. I'd find it a lot more interesting if you had cabalistic weirdos trying to trap each other in the esoteric rules of their magic.

That would probably preclude flashy super-moves, sexy skirts and big ol' mech suits, though... so what do I know, anyway?

You know I think thats one of the things I like about anime, Taking some mundane subjects' and then combining them liberally with Flashy super moves, sexy skirts, and mecha suits, That being said I concur, there is always room for more subtle work, Can't wait for more Mushi shi,

It gets better then gets worse then gets better again story wise. You have a long over arching plot thats broken into with episodic stories.

Also speeking of OVA the guys who made this are behind Mezzo DSA which ova went full on adult henti. If this show doesnt go big enuff expect that ova treatment . Also directors behind Kite which is also part of the Mezzo Forte franchise.

We been tracking the show an talking about it here http://www.animevice.com/anime-vice-discussion-threads/22-2380/wizard-barristers-benmashi-cecil/97-343871/#32

An its not bad over all at all. Think of it as L.A Law meets Harry Poter. Many good character voice actors in this as well. Plus a few visual gags. Bit of fan service to.

@Marshal Victory:

I put down Sabrina the Teenage Witch meets Case Closed while I believe Matt Murphy said Ace Attorney meeting Harry Potter.

I love this show for its mix of law and racism. It reminds me of how minorities fought against racial prejudice using the legal system in the States.

Wizard Barristers later on becomes dark and serious. The only warm moments are fan service where the frog acts perverted or Cecil's 2 co-workers start sexual harassing Cecil and fondling her and the other women. Definitely, it's not getting weirder at all.

I keep thinking this show is Wizard Baristas

If only it was Clarissa Explains it All...

The italics part sounds interesting

I think you will enjoy it. I remember you didn't find anything good this winter season. I hope this show makes it up for you.

@takashichea: It's not that I didn't find anything good, it's that I didn't look for anything. I'm sure there's good stuff out there, I just literally haven't watched anything that debuted this season.

@sickVisionz:

I actually wanted to do that, but given my role in Anime Vice, I have to promote the discussion threads in this community and work on anime series that the staff reviews (IE: Kill la Kill and Attack on Titan). I still haven't caught up in Samurai Flamenco.

I do see your point. Doing a marathon on a series rather than waiting every week can make a difference in your enjoyment. I remember Daniel Newton did a marathon on Attack on Titan, and he didn't had to suffer so much its slow pacing like the others who had to wait for another episode that may stalled or padded out stuff. I'm postponing Kuroko's Basketball again. I did a marathon on season 1, and it got me hooked. I couldn't stop watching it. I didn't have much enjoyment watching season 2 this season because the matches are long. I just never noticed it.

On-topic:

I hope you enjoy Wizards or any of the shows this season or last season.

@sickVisionz:

I am keeping up with some shows as they come out, thanks to my CR membership (Yowapeda is a current favorite). But I'm also able to fully enjoy marathon-ing a bunch of shows from previous seasons and easily watch older series I liked but haven't bought. I've been watching Blue Exorcist again and watched Toradora as well. But as far as my content, I haven't given up on starting again. I think about it a lot.
