Winter Watch: Waiting in the Summer #2

Kaito and company have their first film meeting. Problem is they are all under the influence of "Dynamite Drink".

Welcome to Winter Watch, a series of articles taking a look at some of the shows in the winter anime season. Kaito Kirishima and his friends want to make a movie over the summer but extraterrestrial events are probably going to make the creation of this film more interesting than planned.

Episode 2: Together with Senpai...Summary: After explaining the situation to Nanani, she suddenly invites Ichika to stay at their hose while she is on her trip. Kanna is floored, and informs the group about this new development.
Air Date: Jan. 18, 2012 / Available on Crunchy Roll for Free Users: Jan. 25, 2012
Run Time: 23:41

Warning: This article contains spoilers. We recommend watching the episode HERE first.

The last episode ended with Ichika holding a fainted Kaito just as Nanani (Kaito's sister) and Kanna enter the room catching them in this odd snuggle; thus ending on a cliffhanger. The story picks up right after that. Nanani is trying to assemble the pieces of what she just saw as Ichika and, now recuperated, Kaito try to explain the situation. The moment Kaito's sister realizes that Ichika is technically homeless she offers her sanctuary while she is away for a couple of months. Kanna automatically protests but Nanani still leaves the house to both Kaito and Ichika. The next day, after Nanani left for her trip, the rest of Kaito's friends congregate at Kaito's home to discuss the movie they will film. The meeting deviates from the original priority just as Remon brings out Dynamite Drink for everybody. This beverage basically drunks them taking the group into a very "happy phase". This prefaces a couple of odd games and the appearance ofRinon (an alien life-form) who Ichika introduces as her pet.

Kisses cure everything
Kisses cure everything

The story doesn't end there. A new bruise on Kaito's forehead makes him begin to lose consciousness. Ichika kisses him better and just as Kaito is about to say something, Ichika interrupts him and asks him not to say it...

What's in a Dynamite Drink?
What's in a Dynamite Drink?

The pieces are now in place and the story has begun. I couldn't help but compare the first episode to Please Teacher!, but I can now differentiate both series. While the last episode introduced the characters well, I believe that this episode set up the tone of the rest of the anime even better. The comedic aspects that fell short last time hit their mark here. Ichika demonstrates her alien qualities by failing to shop correctly and Dynamite Drink is at fault for most of the comedy. Without so many words, Remon established that the movie they are filming would be a chronicle about their summer. Added to that, we get a nice glimpse at Ichika's alien nature and background. I definitively like where the story is being taken.

There are a few things that bother me though. I understand what Remon's role is in the series (an odd ball who suggests inappropriate topics and gets her comrades into troublesome situations), but what part do Tetsuro and Mio play here? There might be a few too many characters. Also, like I mentioned above, we get a nice look at extraterrestrial Ichika, but why has nobody realized that she's an alien? In Please Teacher! Kei (the male protagonist) finds out about his teacher Kazami's alien origins from the beginning. Why is it taking Kaito so long to notice?

Verdict

I enjoyed this episode quite a lot, but I can't help and be weary about the whole show's outcome. On the one hand, I am excited to continue with the story. On the other, I feel like some of the characterization is so unstable it could easily make me loose interest. Lets hope that the latter one doesn't happen.

I couldn't help but feel like this was way too cliche, like everything in this episode has already been done before, including the characters.

I'm interested to see how the series decides to develop the whole "filming a movie" concept (there was a glimpse of this at the end where Lemon is filming everyone unawares) and how the concept ties in with the characters' developments. The art and animation is nice and the story is very easy to follow, but so far I don't feel like this series has done anything too interesting.

@AURON570: Onegai series tend to be slow-paced so I think that there is a plan for the rest of the series... I'm just hoping it gets better after this. It did get better from the last episode to here.

I'm enjoying the show so far, lots of it is pretty cliché, but not in an offensively bad sense. I feel like it's a good group of likeable characters. The drunk scene felt pretty genuine, as anyone who's ever got together with a bunch of friends and a bigger bunch of beers can relate too, but I did find it silly how none of them clocked on to the fact that they might be drunk. I was waiting for one of them to go "hand on... am I, like, wasted or something?" but nope!

@Newten: What bothered me the most was that they didn't questions Rinon's appearance! I am curious to know what's in that drink!

@sora_thekey: Must have been some pretty strong stuff, they probably won't even remember Rinon the next day anyway. She needs to keep that thing on a leash or something...

@Newten: But, as we all know from Persona 4 (and probably other anime), japanese teenagers are susceptible to getting sugar highs off of soda. So, clearly there was no alcohol in their drinks. ;)

Why is King's game not popular in other countries? This episode made me love it even more. I will gladly watch it till the end. They didn't care about Rinon. Hahaha.

Fact!

@Newten: @fijilovesyou: I'm thinking that maybe the whole group will be in on Ichika's secret that she's from another planet. (At least Remon has to know!) I wanna play King!
