Winter Watch: Recorder and Randsell Ep. 1

Take a few minutes to check out if this three minute episode is worth your time.

Welcome to Winter Watch, an article series where we will take each episode of some the simulcasted winter season anime and disclose our opinions about them. Among the many shows that are being broadcast this winter season, Recorder and Randsell(Recorder to Randoseru) is probably the most peculiar one.

Episode 1: Atsushi and Atsumi
Summary: Atsushi is worried about his upcoming recorder test. However, after he tries to show off to his classmate, he might have greater troubles.
Air Date: Jan. 05, 2012
Run Time: 03:00

Warning: This article contains spoilers. We recommend watching the episode here first.

This three-minute show focuses on the life and times of the Miyagawa siblings. Atsushi has the build and voice of a grown man but is in fact an 11-year old elementary student. His sister, Atsumi, is a high school student with the physical appearance of a young girl. Of course, because of their age difference, Atsumi tends to be very maternal to Atsushi by doing stuff like picking out his outfits for school. During the episode, Atsushi, in his age-appropriate manner, is only preoccupied in his fifth grade recorder test. Jovially, Atsushi walks to school that morning with his classmate, but comical misinterpretations gets him arrested for being a child molester. Thus ending the episode.

There is not much to say about an episode that only lasts three minutes. Introductions are done and the plot automatically moves along but there is very little time to wrap your head around what is going on. The concept of this series is very amusing; it has potential, but I just wish the episode lasted longer. Even so, the comedic aspect does not fall short. The physical representation of both of these characters is very entertaining, and the situation it puts Atsushi in is especially humorous. Even the subtle crush that Atsumi's friend Sayo conveys towards Atsushi creates a funny atmosphere.

Verdict

While I do think that three minutes is not enough to divulge into the story I was expecting, this was not bad. Plus, it's three minutes, it can't really be a waste of time to watch each episode, right?

I thought ending with Atsushi getting arrested was effective. Even though it was a resolution one could anticipate from a mile away I still got a good laugh about it, so it worked for me! The fact that each episode is 3 minutes is going to make a lot about it hit-or-miss, but I'll give it a chance.

@EquitasInvictus: With a plot like this one the outcome of the episode is pretty predictable but I agree that the execution was effective. Still, I think a 20-min+ series would have made this better.

Man, what an odd concept for a show.

Atsushi walks to school that morning with his classmate, but comical misinterpretations gets him arrested for being a child molester.

Haha, that's giving me flashbacks of the Marui sister's father being arrested all the time in Mitsudomoe. I'm sure they could sympathise with one another, poor guys.

This is one of the winter articles that you guys are secretly planning. Man, I wish I had time to watch leisurely. It's an interesting Slice of Life show.

@Newten: Oh yeah I remember that episode. The problem here is that this is an eleven-year old who looks like a man. How does he get out of this? He's just a kid!
