Winter Watch: Another #4

What?!?!? But if we help you and people stop dying, what will the show be about?

Welcome to Winter Watch, a look at the latest anime season. Among the many shows being broadcast this season, Another finds itself as the sole horror series in the slate.

Episode 4: Put Flesh

Summary: Kouichi continues his search for answers after Yukari's death. Meanwhile, Sanae redefines what it means to have a dropped call.

Air Date: Jan. 30, 2012

Run Time: 25:00

Warning: This article contains spoilers. We recommend watching the episode here first.

"Yeah, i&squot;m just chillin&squot; in a rusty dilapidated elevator right now. What about you?"
"Yeah, i'm just chillin' in a rusty dilapidated elevator right now. What about you?"

After Yukari's untimely death, Kouichi continues his search for answers to the mystery surrounding Class 3. He seeks out Mei, hoping that she can shed some light on what is going on, but she is unwilling to give him any answers. With freak accidents happening around him, his classmates begin avoiding him and whispering behind his back, but when confronted they still won't explain the situation or the what and why that has them so worried. Turning to an unlikely source for answers, nurse Sanae Mizuno, Kouichi seems like he will finally get some clarity on the issue but a dropped call in an elevator kills any chances of him gleaming information from her.

"If we stare hard enough, problems solve themselves!"
"If we stare hard enough, problems solve themselves!"

So, I still don't get it. All of this death is swirling around Kouichi's class and apparently Kouichi broke one of the "rules" which led to Yukari's death, yet nobody in the class will give Kouichi the time of day and explain the situation to him. That situation reminds me of Gantz, where people are forced to go on alien-hunting missions where it's kill or be killed but nobody is willing to pull the trigger on the aliens until their crew has been near slaughtered by said aliens. It's as if everyone forgets that it is indeed kill or be killed. The trigger was literal in Gantz and figurative here but the issue remains the same: how many people are going to be killed because Kouichi's classmates refuse to do what needs to be done?

Redefining what a dropped call is.
Redefining what a dropped call is.

So on to what everyone was probably curious about after the last episode: will someone die and who will it be? I was wondering how they could out do the umbrella impalement from the previous episode and they delivered not one, but two attempts on someone's life in this episode. Kouichi was able to save his classmate from what would likely have ended up as mass impalement or a severing, but unfortunately the nurse wasn't so lucky. Right as Kouichi was about to get some information about Mei Misaki, we were treated to a call literally being dropped. I feel bad for Sanae too. She seemed like a nice person and, despite the age difference, I think Kouichi might have had a shot at her. Unfortunately, this scene made me laugh hard because all I could think about was a physics-defying conversation I had with a friend who suggested that anyone could survive an elevator crash simply by jumping up at the last second. For the record, this is false.

Another good episode. I'm a little upset that the mystery wasn't able to progress any due to the actions (or lack thereof) of the characters but the premise remains intriguing and it's hard to deny that the brutal deaths have led to a fun game of who will get it this week.

Things are really getting scary.

I knew the nurse was going to get it eventually, one way or another. What I'm bothered about is how the MC reacts to these situations. I don't know, I guess, it's not terrified enough. It just seems disconnected to the overall vibe of the show so far.

Eh, anyways, looking forward to how this story turns out and uh, I guess more gruesome deaths. :P

Kind of like when Lost started and you didn't know who was going to be killed.

I hope this series does not continue to kill off characters that I have become somewhat attached to, but I know better than that. The energetic drama girl had a close shave but I doubt she'll be that lucky in the future. Well, at least I know Mei won't get killed off which is nice. I know they only have 12 episodes to get as many gruesome deaths in as possible but I hope there's not a death per episode, kinda takes any suspense out of it.

As soon as the nurse said she had a brother in the class I knew she was gonna go this episode. I think maybe it would've been more tense and surprising if it was revealed that her brother was in Class 3 after she died but whatever.

This episode was pretty gruesome. I lost my appetite watching it. I hope they get more in depth with the actual story though....they keep leaving the viewers hanging.

Dude, I just realized that the character's design bears a resemblance to Haruhi Suzumiya. The same creator who dazzles my little sister with that weird story. I never read it. It's interesting that the creator is doing a horror genre.

Nice job sickVisionz!
