Winter 2012 Anime Season Preview

Need something to keep you busy during 2012? Look no further.

Winter season is the time for holiday cheer, new year's resolutions and new anime. This year we are served with a lot of potentially great series that are bound to make us laugh, cry or make us say "Heck Yeah!".

The list below composes of a lot of sequel anime like the fourth seasons of Natsume Yuujinchou and Familiar of Zero. It also includes a lot of new anime that are "out of this world", like Kyousogiga, a story which literally walks in between a world of humans and a world of monsters, or Another, that seems to tell a mystery-filled tale of dark hallways and pretty girls. Also, this season preview can not without its comedy series like Kill Me Baby!. If you are a fan of the Onegai Teacher franchise, like me, then you'll probably want to check out Ano Natsu de Matteru. There is also Rinne no Lagrange and Aquarion EVOL, two anime you might want watch to see if they measure up to other mech series you like. I personally am interested in Recorder to Randoseru; the premise has potential to be either really funny or really boring.

Now that 2012 has begun, my new year's resolution is to watch more anime and I think I'll start with the ones below! What will you watch?

I like the look of this Poyo character. Kid's got a lotta moxy.

takashichea moderator is online on Jan. 10, 2012 at 3:51 p.m.

Black Rock Shooter and Busou Chuugakusei Basket Army look interesting.

ShadowKnight508 moderator on Jan. 10, 2012 at 3:55 p.m.

I shall be watching Black Rock Shooter this season, along with Highschool DxD, since I am already doing the manga/character pages for the franchise and it should be a decent series.

sickVisionz moderator on Jan. 10, 2012 at 4:05 p.m.

Nisemonogatari, Another, Kill Me Baby, Milky Holmes 2, and Amagami SS+ are the ones I want to watch. So far 2/5 of them are availably legitimately. I'm hoping that TAN picks up Amagami since their retail release wing put out the first series on DVD and hoping for Crunchyroll to pick up MH2 (they got the first season) and KMB.

Kyouso looks interesting. I think I saw a 15 second clip of it on youtube a few weeks back and the animation looked pretty nice.

MrXDon Jan. 10, 2012 at 4:12 p.m.

I never got the chance to watch any anime that looks interesting last year. Hopefully this year will be different.

SergioBon Jan. 10, 2012 at 4:55 p.m.

Rinne no Lagrange is streaming on Hulu. While Crunchyroll announced streaming Papa no Iu Koto Kikinasai! today.

InfiniteGeasson Jan. 10, 2012 at 5:21 p.m.

Nisemonogatari is all I'll be watching this season. Along with the continuation of Persona 4, Guilty Crown, and Future Diary.

Halberdierv2on Jan. 10, 2012 at 5:40 p.m.

Another and Black Rock Shooter for me, and I might look at the first season of The Familiar of Zero.

Petiewon Jan. 10, 2012 at 6:31 p.m.
Daily lives of high school boys was surprisingly hillarious, if you're looking for a comedy I'd recommend checking that one out.
MisterXon Jan. 10, 2012 at 6:45 p.m.

Meh. That's a lot of anime, but nothing leaps off the page at me. Maybe I'll check out Black Rock Shooter, and that's it.

EquitasInvictuson Jan. 10, 2012 at 6:52 p.m.

Another is shaping up to be another amazing P.A. Works production. They're spot on from everything between the visuals and the sounds such that they really establish a great, creepy atmosphere from the onset. I wrote a little something on it.

Ano Natsu de Matteru is a nice, mellow throwback to the Onegai Teacher/Twins series. In fact, you can pretty much draw parallels between the two. I definitely appreciated the nostalgia, considering it has been pretty much a decade since the Onegai anime series. Also, I feel like these guys must have watched Super 8 and felt inspired to borrow from it to an extent, even though the references are pretty superficial.

Nisemonogatari is of course shaping out to be another Shaft hit. I'm definitely excited to watch it through.

Having followed Amagami SS, I'll also be following Amagami SS+.

I'll have to watch more of Bodacious Space Pirates before I can make a call on it.

And I'm definitely down for the ridiculousness of Kill Me Baby.

I marathoned most of The Familiar of Zero so I might as well finish it off. Not too big on it, though.

That pretty much sums up everything I've watched thus far this season. Looking forward to see what they're gonna do with Black Rock Shooter.

metalsnakezeroon Jan. 10, 2012 at 7:23 p.m.

I'm watching

  • Amagami SS+ plus - for some of the characters
  • Senhime Zesshou Symphogear - it works well
  • Nisemonogatari - F yeah!
  • Ano Natsu de Matteru - has a nice set up and characters
  • Another - Creepy!
  • Black Rock Shooter - I just need to see it!
Darokion Jan. 10, 2012 at 7:53 p.m.

I'm super impressed with the first episode of Amagami SS+. Started off with the most interesting character and generated a really interesting situation from it. Also really enjoying Another's slow build as it's dark and creepy in a way reminiscent of Deadman Wonderland but is focusing on more quiet terror than Deadman's bombast. I'm stunned at the amount of critical reception that Bodacious Space Pirates is getting after it's first episode, so I'm looking forward to seeing if it's worth the hype.

AURON570on Jan. 10, 2012 at 8:47 p.m.

Ano Natsu De Matteru, Amagami SS+, Aquarion Evol. I'm probably not going to have time until school's over though.. holy cow this semester is a lot more work than I thought it would be.

sotyfan16on Jan. 10, 2012 at 10:19 p.m.

I've made not of the shows I'll be watching from this season but I still have a long way to go until I get around to watching them. Still have to finish 2011!

sora_thekey moderator on Jan. 11, 2012 at 1:46 a.m.

Decided! I'm definitively watching Recorded and Randsell and Ano Natsu de Mattero. Might watch Mouretsu Pirates and Another and I am still thinking about Listen to Me Girls, I'm Your Father and Kyousogiga.

zaldaron Jan. 11, 2012 at 8:28 a.m.

another and therma romea are the only ones that interest me. Recorder looks like it will go to far down the loli path all most immediately. Kill me baby, and listen to me girls I am your father I expect will also. Nisimongatarai all ready has from what I have heard...which makes me sad.

Username_Undefinedon Jan. 11, 2012 at 12:15 p.m.

I'm definitely going to watch Brave 10, and both Ano Natsu de Matteru and Mouretsu Pirates had interesting pilots. Just from reading the blurbs, Rinne no Lagrange and Danball Senki W sound interesting. I'll probably watch Black Rock Shooter just because the OVA was confusing but interesting. Also, there's a movie that isn't on the list that I want to see. For those who remember the Magic Treehouse book series, there's a movie based on it coming out this season.

Mesoianon Jan. 11, 2012 at 2:52 p.m.

Natsume Yuujin-chou Shi

FUCKING AWESOME! I'm actually liking how winter/spring is shaping up. Kill Me Baby is god damn terrible. The 4-koma is hard enough to read due to the super....dumb gags. Pair it with voices that are just...horridly annoying and you have something that's borderline unwatchable.

Lot of interesting stuff with a lot of fetishist bullshit thrown in. Seriously, why is "Listen to me girls, I'm your father?" a thing?

fijilovesyouon Jan. 11, 2012 at 3:08 p.m.

Watching: (33% of the winter anime, this is a lot since this season is packed with interesting series than the fall)

  • Ano Natsu De Matteru (gives the AnoHana vibe)
  • Another (horror... a change of pace)
  • Area No Kishi (my next sports anime)
  • Inu Boku SS (I still yet to see it...)
  • Mouretsu Pirates (my next space battle related anime)
  • New Prince Of Tennis (love the original series)
  • Nisemonogatari (so effin happy, love Bakemonogatari)
  • Papa No Iu Koto Kikinasai (this is the anime I am looking forward the most, impressed by the synopsis.)
  • Zero No Tsukaima F (I enjoyed the whole series. Time to finish this.)
