White Fox: "Oops, We Got Hax0red"

The studio speaks!

White Fox, the studio behind the upcoming anime Katanagatari, has spoken out about the recent leak of its opening sequence, storyboards, and other production materials, which I reported on yesterday. Apparently the studio had an FTP server which was hacked by an unknown (or at least undisclosed) party, where the files were taken.

More than that, the studio has apologized...but the damage has already been done. And by "damage" I'm referring not to the leak itself so much as the speculation that White Fox staged the whole thing, an idea I've seen mentioned a few places even before I read blogger Borderline Hikikomori's thoughts on the matter.

As for me? Well, it does seem convenient that the materials that were leaked were not entire episodes or something else more damaging, but on the other hand, it's my understanding that most anime studios don't finish episodes three weeks prior to airing, much less multiple episodes. I could see it either way, but there's not enough evidence for me to come to any kind of determination, so I think I'll just remain neutral on the topic.

The more important info is: Katanagatari looks awesome.

@Slim: I haven't seen an X-Men Animated Series clip in ages! Even if it was dubbed over

@danielm: And dubbed over relatively well, too. Shoot. We should dub anime.
danielm staff on Jan. 8, 2010 at 4:52 p.m.
@gia: Ohhhh man you shouldn't have said that, cause now we have to :)   That'd be hilarious.
giaon Jan. 8, 2010 at 4:57 p.m.
@danielm: It would! But legal'd probably have to do some research to make sure that the "parody" fair use clause applies to works originating in Japan. That always throws me off. (Quick lesson in copyright: Japan and the US both go by the Berne Convention, which means that anything copyright in Japan is protected in the US as it would be IN Japan. Japan has no "fair use," so you theoretically shouldn't be legally able to dub over an unlicensed show and call it "parody" and be okay...but once it's licensed in the US I'm not sure how that works.)

Stupid legal complications. That would be *fun.*

Even with US Saturday morning they are rather harsh unless you cut them all to hell. When do they not bring down the hammer? When your work is funny and makes their work come back into public rotation.
