When Manga Characters Make Manga

Awesome promotional concept for 20th Century Boys.

As someone who studied marketing in her college career, I can always appreciate a really cool promotional scheme. The latest in Japan? Having a manga character create their own manga. This is especially handy for a manga like 20th Century Boys, which finished up in Japan back in 2006 (i.e. no longer regularly appears in a manga anthology).

The Naoki Urasawa manga, which is getting a live-action movie and is just now being released in North America at last –features a manga-making duo amongst its characters. These two characters-- who go by Ujiko-Ujio, which is a take on Doraemon creator duo Fujiko Fujio --recently released a one-shot manga in Big Comic Spirits called Aozora Chu-Ihou, which translates to “Blue Sky Warning – Kiss.”

The art style definitely looks different from Urasawa's; I wonder if he's just adapted, or if someone else did the art? And if the latter, who?

How very like 20 Century Boys to offer us a little mystery!
