When LOL Just Isn't Enough: Golden Boy Episode 1

sotyfan16 kicks off this new feature exploring comedy in anime. First off: Golden Boy, episode 1!

Uhh..come again?
Uhh..come again?

Have you ever sat down to watch a comedic movie? I’m sure you have and I do, too. But when it comes to anime most people want depth and meaning and the whole 9 yards. Needless to say, I don’t and I welcome the pointless and eccentric comedies that are there to relieve my stress from ordinary life 20 minutes at a time. So without further ado I present to you this new segment I’d like to callWhen LOL Just Isn’t Enough.

In the face!
In the face!

In this segment I will cover an episode each time that made me laugh so much that I had tears or had to pause the show or maybe, just maybe, caused me to fall out of my seat. And today’s first go is withGolden Boy episode 1! I randomly came across this anime when looking for something new to watch when I really got into anime a few years ago and man did I feel like I hit the jackpot. Golden Boy isn't very popular and the anime is about 15 years old but its story and antics are timeless. I'll say in advance that Golden Boy is an adult anime.

The opening scene finds you listening to guy riding his bike singing along with the radio while girls talk about how nerdy and dorky that is. You immediately find out it's none other than the protagonist Kintaro Oe , a 25-year-old freeter (someone who basically just does part-time jobs). Out of nowhere a speeding Ferrari comes from behind to make him lose control and crash into a big pile of trash. With a start like that I knew I was going to laugh my ass off.

Man I wish I could get run off the road by a car and get $10,000! But lo and behold Kintaro whips out his trusty notebook to record the start of another chapter in his life. He's such a carefree and happy guy. I love his tagline, "This is so educational." It never fails the guy would be surrounded by beautiful women and be stuck doing menial chores while having perverted thoughts along with great overreacting rants and facial expressions. But despite his usually untimely flaw he works hard, is ready to learn, and will help in any way (indeed any). Being back in the mid-90s this episode dealt with how not everyone had a computer and not everyone could work with programming. Back then working with computers was fun and educational (Much like it is today!).

Wait, I'd like to add another image. When I was typing this the font was so freaking small it overlapped. I want to picture to be Small and Float Left beside the last paragraph. Here is the image.

This can't be good.
This can't be good.

Kintaro screws up of course. Like, so bad it cost the company quite a bit of money. But wait! He drops off a disc with the program the computer programmers were working on for months that he deleted and made an even better one in a week! Let alone he gave the $10,000 to a couple in trouble. What's up with this guy? How can he be so smart and so stupid at the same time? Maybe that's what you get when Kintaro studied law at Tokyo University but gave up graduating to travel on his trusty bike doing odd jobs.

Remember kids: study, study, study, study, study!!!!

*Sadly, this title is not streaming anywhere legally so no video.

I can also heartily recommend Golden Boy - it's short, but oh so sweet. Tons of laugh-out-loud moments in it.

You definitely started with a bang - Golden Boy will be hard to top, so I'm quite interested in seeing what else you got lined up. Though since you're doing this based on episodes and not the series' as whole, there're definitely some good candidates out there. I'm guessing stuff like Fumoffu and Azumanga will make their way into your feature - but if you want to check out some really eccentric and hilarious stuff, I suggest looking up Masuda Kousuke Gekijou Gag Manga Biyori. Any episodes I've managed to find have almost always been pure gold.

There has been some surprisingly good new stuff out as well (Seitokai Yakuindomo, SoreMachi etc.). I'm really enjoying Nichijou right now despite almost dropping it after the poor start (it took a while for them to hit their stride) - if you look at it on episode basis, it has some real gems in it that have had me gasping for breath.

awesome new series (this site needs some.) if you have time you should check out desert punk, that show had me rolling, and the dub was pretty good too.

This series is one of my favorites of all time. It's also one of the few series where I prefer to watch the english dub or the original japanese voices.

Disregard this part everyone.

Good old after 10pm TV ^^

It's crazy when you look at where the manga went. No wonder they stopped the anime after the first Volume.

Awesome read.  You hooked me with your first paragraph.

"But when it comes to anime most people want depth and meaning and the whole 9 yards. Needless to say, I don’t and I welcome the pointless and eccentric comedies that are there to relieve my stress from ordinary life 20 minutes at a time."

I am with you a 100% on this principle.   Maybe I'm lazy-brained but when I finish an anime, I want to feel good.  I don't want to be scratching my head thinking "what the hell did that all mean?".   Anything that gets too abstract or worse yet, depressing, loses me.

Anyway, I still need to see Golden Boy.  Considering that it's only 6 episodes long, I really have few excuses.  I know you have some trouble getting into older series, so if you liked this one, I know it's gotta be pretty good.  I'm adding it to my "recommended" list.

This was such an absurd show.  I enjoyed it for what it was.
