Threw you guys for a loop, didn’t I? That’s understandable. Who in their right mind would find anything funny about Death Note? It is my reasons that many of you will find fault in and most likely question my mental state. But be patient.
Some of you might already know from my comments on numerous Death Note and Light Yagami topics that I see eye-to-eye with the man. Part of the reason I enjoyed the series is because I wanted to see the outcome of Light’s work. What none of you know, though, is that both of my parents work for the DOC (Department of Corrections). I posed the questions that this series brought to light (sorry for the pun but it’s hard to circumvent) to my parents. In the overall scope they considered such actions as strictly murder, even if the victims were criminals. I took their thoughts at that and let it be despite my feelings on the offset method of justice.
I laughed multiple times during the series. Most of those times were when Light’s plans worked to his advantage. But these final 2 episodes brought everything to a head. I was on the edge of my seat with bated breath and adrenaline coursing through my veins as my heart raced. I laughed so hard and was yelling, “Yes!” during Mikami’s “Delete!” scene. I find such moments akin to those when the bad guy laughs when he thinks he’s about to win or have an advantage over the good guy despite there being nothing funny.
Light’s mental breakdown during the final episode had me rolling. Psychiatrists would have a heyday with Light and here I am, laughing my ass off, with minimal psychology know-how. His short-sightedness caused his downfall and I pointed at the screen talking to myself about how I saw the switch coming.
The rest of the episode plays out like anyone would think it would but I found solace in Light’s futile efforts to salvage the situation and Mikami’s suicide-by-pen. I did calm down by the end of the episode since Light looked at peace when he died. But I did giggle whenMisa oh-so-obviously committed suicide.
I’m sure none of you found the show funny and it goes to show that, depending on the series, I’ll find something funny. I thought likeKira while watching each episode and, looking back, I found the demise and faults of characters laughable in the course of stepping into the shoes of evil.
Watch these episodes, "1.28" and "New World" below to see if my thoughts have any legitimacy.
