The problem with fight shonens that are as… * AHEM *… thorough about depicting battles as thoroughly as this show does, is that there sometimes isn’t that much to write-up for a given episode. Well, beyond a blow-by-blow commentary on the fight, of course: but does anybody really want to read a breakdown of Gon’s strategy in evading this bad guy’s dancing tops? I know I’m not interested in one, myself (and I can’t get enough of this stuff, obviously).
Maybe to reach a little higher, I’m wryly amused over how the message/theme of this episode is about Gon recklessly using this dangerous ‘Nen’ technique without enough caution for his own safety (Four-Eyes leaves no room for doubt about that during the lecture at the end). When you’ve watched too much of this stuff, as I have, you do end up playing this hyper-specific game of trying to identify and grade the value of THEME.
You know what I’m talking about… does the conflict properly address the theme? Does this plot development contradict the theme? Is it just about the theme, and not about character? Or, more to the point, is it a good theme? That last question can get especially silly at times, especially when you’ve got fans who can’t process the notion that a story can be appreciated when * GASP * it expresses opinions counter to their own.
Anyway, I bring that up because usually, stories like this make the point that the hero actually should charge into a situation with abandon, pushing in all his chips because self-belief is the path to victory. Hell, that was sort-of the point of how Gon won the Hunter Exam, right?
I have a hunch that Gon’s going to wind up proving that right again. He'll pay Wing lip-service right now, sure, but he's going to go ahead and do it anyway. However, if this arc really does stick with the idea that there's value to caution, then HUNTER X HUNTER might be really that different of a shonen.
