What's the Appeal of ONE PIECE #643?

Special Review. Oh, it's good to visit with you Straw Hats again.

Back when I was following the “Punk Hazard” arc, week to week, for a year, I figured the appeal of ONE PIECE could be summed up, in its most basic terms, as a weekly opportunity to hang out with the Straw Hats for 20 minutes. What came before a given episode, and what came after it, didn’t matter, so much. Certainly not as much as it would for a finite series.

To prove this point, I figured I’d just drop back in after sitting out for dozens of episodes… and, look at that, I’m pretty much right.

The Straw Hats are on another island. They still haven’t defeated Don Flamingo. I don’t know the specifics of why a beaten and bruised Caesar Clown’s continuing to be in the picture, but I don’t really need to. Hell, there’s nothing about the predicaments Luffy, Usopp and Sanji’s are in which I can’t guess.

Usopp’s been telling some tall tales, and a society of cute Lilliputians have mistaken him for some legendary hero. Luffy’s been mistaken for ‘Lucy’ by the announcer of a pseudo-Roman gladiatorial arena, and now he’s got to do battle with a mega-bull like some elastic matador. And Sanji’s found himself playing white knight to yet another beautiful lass who isn’t likely to return his affections. That all sounds about right.

And you know what? That’s all perfect. Popping in like this brought a smile to my face, because I didn’t have to deal with weeks and weeks of… * AHEM *… deliberate pacing to get to this point. I don’t plan to stay on board with the Straw Hats for the rest of this voyage, but it was wonderful to visit with them. Again, the most appeal is why this show’s #1, I reckon.

Watch "Shaking Heaven and Earth - - Admiral Fujitora’s Power" and decide for yourself.

Well, the reason Caesar Clown is with them is because they want to force Doflamingo to step down as a Seven Warlord of The Sea and King of Dressrosa . That plan didn't work out that well LOL!

Any who, I don't mind the deliberate pacing because Oda like to put tons of stuff in each chapter. (the anime I usually skip to the good parts).

Also Tom, I think you off about 300 episodes LOL! I sad that you going to miss the Funk brothers, their powers are crazy and also the Straw Hat's number one fanboy

I guess you can somewhat grab the jest of whats going on, but it's easy to miss lots of important details and context for scenarios when you skip around like this lol. Especially when the series is as in depth as One Piece it helps to not miss episodes or at least have knowledge of how stuff played out in manga.Throughout the series foreshadowing of various characters are dropped literally hundreds of episodes and chapters before they appear. I can understand not wanting to waist the time trying to catch up especially if you have no intention of following on a regular basis, but it really only takes a couple minutes on forums or a quick trip to a wiki page to fill in the gaps and brush up on whats happening.

I think the week by week basis of crazy adventures with the Straw Hats is definitely one of the big draws of the series. But as a long time fan of the series what makes me most interested is actually the ongoing world, lore, characters, etc. Usopp tricks the dwarves because of a character that appeared hundreds of chapters before, the tournament results in something that was teased hundreds of chapters ago as well.

Yeah I feel you can't get the full experience unless your actively following the series. Skipping around on the show or especially the manga takes the shock value from events and only serves to dampen the experience.I only suggested hitting up the wiki and forums as treatment for confusion and lack of context, but it's by no means a cure that can give you the full One Piece experience.

It's a slow episode, and it's setting up the next things. It's teasing fans with just a glimpse of the Navy Admiral's power. Luffy is riding a bull at coliseum. Sanji and Kine'mon are together. Zoro is probably lost somewhere. I finally caught up to One Piece after a year long marathon, Anime Marathon 2013-2014: Toriko and One Piece.
