What The F@#$? Did I Just Watch?! ONE PIECE

An anime N00B's take...

Wow… the first episode of Shonen Jump’s ONE PIECE is a lot of good, sun-shiney fun. I suppose I could go on about how the Picaresque plot was so appealing and how tickled I was by the body language of the character animation ( Monkey really isn’t the ONLY rubbery character), but I’m going to sail on a different wind in the “What The F@#$ Did I Just Watch?!” ocean.  Instead, I’m going to reach into my closet and pull out my “comparative literature” hat, because I couldn’t shake the pleasing similarities to J.M. Barrie’s classic PETER PAN here.

Both have got pirates in a fantasy landscape. That’s a given. But what really got my mind thinking about this was the pink-haired kid (whose name escapes me, right now). Even before I started making connections, I was thinking, “As sheepish toadies go, this guy makes Smee look like a dominant Type-A personality.”  The guy takes a bold step across the line in the sand by the episodes end and defies his mistress, but until then… SHEESH.

If he’s Smee and the ugly pirate lady is Cap’n Hook, then Monkey is most definitely Pan with his blithe mix of a naïve dream (to become king of the pirates) and a cavalier, rubber limbs-snapping destructiveness.  Seriously, Peter Pan’s first line in the original novel was spoken to Wendy and it went something along the lines of “There’s an Indian sleeping against a tree in the woods. You want to come with me and slit his throat?”  Here, we have Monkey’s compulsion to hurt kid pink hair explained so carelessly and honestly - - “I just want to.”

Alright, comparative literature hat off, pop culture hat on. I watched a dubbed version of this episode and the theme song made an impression on me! Man… I haven’t heard a singer just FEELING a cartoon theme song since those Disney shows from the 80s. DUCKTALES, GUMMI BEARS… those were themes songs with such over-production, schmaltzy lyrics and vocal range, it was as if Michael McDonald himself were behind the mic.

Anyway, if this review comes off as bit stream-of-consciousness, it’s because Monkey’s reckless spirit has put me in touch with my own inner child. I can already feel my limbs turning rubbery and there’s no magic fruit.   Actually… no! I wrote it this way because I “just want to.” NYAH!

I remember back in the day when I first watched One Piece and my feeling were about the same... but now look at me. I'm married to the bitch.

One Piece is a lot of fun, but got to warn you. It takes a while to warm up. One of my favorite episodes in Episode 94. It's filled with reckless spirited fun. Though I think it's best in subtitles. Not that the dub is bad. FUNimation's website is great place to watch, but is missing a lot of the best episodes.

I don't think I've ever heard it described by comparing it to Peter Pan. That's in interesting concept.

You ever seen Rocky Horror Picture Show? They just recently introduced a character into the anime that is just like Frankenfurter. It's hilarious.

I've watched random episodes of One Piece on TV... but I guess I would need to start at the beginning... at least to get context...

I just might... I just finished 3 anime series... so why not?

Dam you tom, god dam you to hell for linking that song in the article. When ever i hear a song from an old cartoon that i grew up loving it makes me all nostalgic and dreamy eyed. Then i get a flood of memorable songs stuck in my head for the next week!

As for one piece, my first introduction to it was reading the manga in Shonen Jump back when i was in grade nine. It was just as Luffy was going tot he island to get that guy who always lied and shot stuff with a sling shot. I think i got to the end of that story arc when i stopped buying the Shonen Jump magazines, and i only ever watched a few episodes here and there of the castrated version they originally dubbed. While they ruined the show, as you said, the intro was pure magic. I haven't heard a theme song as catchy as that in ages.

Wow, reading someone's take on the first episode of One Piece is  kind of weird for someone like me who's seen over 300 episodes. Like FoxxFireArt said, it takes a while to warm up but you'll see that your impressions of it will change many episodes from now (if you continue to watch it that is) because many new characters, villains, and plot points are introduced (don't get too into Koby or the pirate villain in episode 1 because they're not major characters later on).

I love the series. Like people have said it takes awhile for it to kick off, but imo that's a good thing.
