Weekly Query: Crossovers

Are they all as bad as those DC/Marvel crossovers we've seen in the past?

One Piece meets DBZ meets Naruto... FTW!
One Piece meets DBZ meets Naruto... FTW!
It has been recently  announced that Toriko and  One Piece will be getting an anime crossover this April. Crossovers in anime or manga are not all that uncommon. Character cameos in anime might not always be as obvious as you might think, but they are always there.

An example would be the moe, slice of life series,  Lucky Star. The anime has had various cameo and crossover appearances. On various episodes  The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was acknowledged several times in either a concert, cosplay or conversation. Other characters from One Piece St. Frog and  Fullmetal Alchemist were cosplayed in an episode and characters from  Pani Poni Dash! were shown as classmates in an episode. There is even an episode of  Fullmetal Alchemist where  Death Note characters appear. Usually when an anime or manga's plot is based on the real world, for example  Bakuman or  Genshiken, it is common that they will mention other series like  Naruto or  Bleach
Out of the series I listed above the Toriko/One Piece crossover might be the prime example of an anime crossover. We all agree that sometimes we see anime characters or stories that would fit perfect with another franchise. With that, I am throwing the discussion to you: What two anime/manga series would you like to see a crossover of?

I would put forward that CLAMP has had the best track record for crossovers, albeit ones among their own series - Tokyo Babylon and CLAMP School Detectives crossing over into X/1999, Angelic Layer leading into Chobits, and their latest series, Tsubasa, including alternate universe versions of characters from all their earlier series, as well as crossing over with xXxHolic

As far as crossovers I'd like to see are concerned, I'd kind of like to see one of the Super Robot Wars crossover games turned into an anime. Not one of the Original Generation games, but something crossing over the various mecha series, where we could have Gurren Laggan and Simon fighting alongside the Ideon, and the various female mecha jockeys from Nadesico going off about how cute Bonta-Kun is.

I just really like this:

I haven't put any thought into crossovers so I don't know where I'd begin. If one comes up that includes shows I like then I'll check it out. But also, I think leaving series the way they are works fine.

I would pay for that.... Koji Kabuto and Kamina teaming up, Setsuna F. Seiei and Heero Yuy sitting togheter in a bench, and doing wht they do best, not showing any kind of emotion. The Arc Gurren Lagann fight alongside the Shin Getter Dragon...... There so much to say....

Dragon Ball Z and Bleach, so I could see Vegeta beat Aizen to a bloody pulp with his pinky finger.
Wait, no, lets not turn this into a battle thread...

Hmmm... Zero no Tsukaima and Ore no Imouto. Louise and Saito finally get home but something's different; it's like Saito never existed there, so they have no home to go to. They bump into Kirino and Kyousuke and Kirino immediately realises Louise is some sort of magical girl and offers their home to them. Madness ensues.

That's right off the top of my head, probably wouldn't work at all, but I'd still like to see it.
I also just realised how alike those characters are, I think they'd get along with each other pretty well...

I'd like to see them do something like when DC and Marvel created Amalgam Comics and did a bunch of one shots where they merged characters into new ones like Dr. Doomsday (Doomsday x Dr. Doom), Dark Claw (Wolverine x Batman), Amazon (Storm x Wonderwoman) and Super Soldier (Captain America x Superman).

Those are bit more creative and interesting to me than just having a guest appearances.  Shounen Jump has rights to the Big 3 so I'd get a kick of seeing them combine those into one mix and match characters (Sasuke x Byakuya) and concepts (Zoro gets a Hollow Mask, Chopper with a Kyuubi) between One Piece, Naruto and Bleach.

I don't think it'd be a situation where they cancel the original series and only have the crossover.  I think the crossovers are pure bonus content.

@sickVisionz:
Oh I know that. i just meant that nothing special being done with a series is fine with me.

I am anti-crossover. They usually result in what I would call a waste of a perfectly good plot. That Lupin and Detective Conan crossover was one of the more disappointing things I have ever seen. They end up being cop-outs and products that aim for the lowest common denominators.

Now you want to talk about a waste of a perfectly good plot? Let's talk about that third season. What a God damned waste of my fucking time.
Daniel_Newton moderator on March 14, 2011 at 5 a.m.
@zombiepie: You know, even though I consider Zero one of my favourites, it feels like it's been forever since I watched it, so I only vaguely remember what happens in it. Maybe it's time to watch through it again.

I remember enjoying all of it, but I think I liked the first season the most. I'd like it if they made a fourth season. Maybe I should check the manga out to see if it goes past the events in the anime.

I would like a Super Robot Taisen anime, with all the big guns of Super Robots teaming up, with Koji Kabuto and Ryoma Nagare insulting each other and trying to get the spotlight as they kill, maim and destroy....

Dig Deeper into Crossover

A concept where several characters from different, separate stories and series meet up.
