Weekly Ponies: Friendship is Magic #2-14

Love it or loathe it, it's true! Ponies have invaded Anime Vice. See what Daniel thought of the latest episode and get ready for some pony-talk in the comments. Also: Derpy Hooves.

Welcome to Weekly Ponies, where Daniel Newton takes a look at My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the charming kid's show that's taken the internet by storm and somehow amassed a predominantly teen to adult male fan base. Created by Lauren Faust, who previously worked on shows including The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

Season 2, Episode 14: The Last Round Up
Summary: Applejack turns up missing a week after she left for the big rodeo. When her friends find her working at another ranch, she claims that she is not coming back to Ponyville, and refuses to give them an explanation. What is keeping her from returning and, more importantly, is her stay permanent? Twilight and the others hope to find the answer.
Air Date: Jan. 21, 2012
Run time: 22:00

Warning: This article contains spoilers. We recommend watching the episode on YouTube or buying it through iTunes.

Haters gonna hate, Derpy's gonna derp
Haters gonna hate, Derpy's gonna derp

Okay, lets get something out of the way: Derpy Hooves. Derpy. Is. Canon. Now. ...what?! For those of you who don't watch this show (and are probably reading this My Little Pony article out of curiosity and/or disbelief) let me explain. Derpy Hooves--the cock-eyed blonde pegasus pony--was originally a minor background character with a technical hitch messing her eyes up. Fans of the show noticed this and took a liking to her, giving her the "Derpy" nickname. The show's producers decided to include her, lazy eyes withstanding, in several cameo appearances, and she was referred to as "Ditzy Doo" by the show's creator. This episode however... had a degree of fan service we aren't used to here at Anime Vice. Ditzy not only made an appearance this episode, but even got a voice, full-on herp-derp personality and is now officially named Derpy. This is all purely for the crazy internet fan base this show has, and it's amazing.

Check out the Equestria Daily post here to understand the level of crazy I'm talking about.

"I Love Lucy" homage
"I Love Lucy" homage

So, thanks to Derpy, well... being Derpy, the roof of Ponyville Town Hall was destroyed. Since it's time for this year's Equestria Rodeo Competition (which everyone is convinced Applejack will win) Applejack has promised everyone to use the prize money to fix the roof. After a week the other ponies organise a victory party for her... but she doesn't show up, prompting our pony-heroes to go and find her. Once the gang find her in Dodge Canyon working on a cherry orchard we're treated to a particularly great homage to the 50's TV show I Love Lucy, which I only recognised because of a similar homage in the show Drake and Josh (I mean come on, I'm not that old). Again, like the whole Derpy scene, this is something that would go right over the target audience's collective heads, and it was great.

Ponies pulling ponies... so great
Ponies pulling ponies... so great

But wait, there's more! They finally convince Applejack to tell them what's going on at breakfast the next morning, but she doesn't show up; enraging Pinkie Pie to no end for breaking a Pinkie-Promise. After making a quick "I gotta get the heck outta Dodge" comment, Applejack, a pony, gets on a carriage pulled by... other ponies. It's not the first time this has been seen in the show, but I found it fantastically dumb and brilliant at the same time. Of course, they eventually catch her and she spills the beans. She didn't win the rodeo and took the job at the cherry orchard to earn money for the roof.

Verdict

There was a lot to love this episode from the cherry sorting scene, to the pony cart chase... to Derpy effin' Hooves (did I mention that?) and it reassured me that by watching this show I've become part of something very special, and completely ridiculous. It's not that unusual for a kid's show to appeal to those outside of it's target demographic, but My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic takes it to a whole new level. If you haven't checked this show out yet, this is a great episode to try. Dive in and see what all the fuss is about, you might just enjoy it.

ARE YOU F$%KING KIDDING ME!?!? MY LITTLE PONIES ON ANIMEVICE???!!!! WHAT THE F*&K IS THIS, I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS S#$*!!!

....Just kidding. Really though, didn't expect to see My Little Ponies weekly review by you Newton.

takashichea moderator on Jan. 25, 2012 at 12:03 a.m.

I should have seen his poll as a foreshadowing event for the review. Never underestimate Daniel Newton! I should try this during the summer. Should be good show to destress after school's over.

sora_thekey moderator on Jan. 25, 2012 at 12:06 a.m.

Hahaha! When you told me that you were going to start a new Weekly article I totally didn't expect this!

Mdnthrvston Jan. 25, 2012 at 1:03 a.m.

A show with a daily blog, two entire imageboards, and the unyielding devotion of 4chan's /co/, apparently warrants a weekly segment on an anime website. One that's clearly intended to attract new viewers, no less.

Sometimes I wonder if this has gotten out of hand. Ponies are ponies, and I think that at this point the entire Internet has made their position clear on one side or the other.

Daniel_Newton moderator on Jan. 25, 2012 at 1:36 a.m.

@buhssuht: @takashichea: @sora_thekey: SURPRISE! Haha, I thought everyone would suspect this after the poll in the forums.

@Mdnthrvst: I understand what you're saying, and you're absolutely welcome to ignore the pony article each week. That said, the show has become extremely popular with the same sort of audience as this website, so it makes total sense to post articles about it here. Plus, it adds a little extra variety to what we cover. I sent this idea to staff first to get their approval, and they gave me the go-ahead saying it should be interesting to see how the articles go down.

Also, I genuinely enjoy the show and would love to talk about it with the Whiskey Media community each week, because they're the people I like to hang out with on the net.

TeflonBillyon Jan. 25, 2012 at 5:18 a.m.

No mention of Pinkie Pie turning even more into Deadpool by being obsessed with chimichangas?!

Also, this was totes hilars

I've never really watched this and doubt I ever will. The animation seems good and its nice they've added references for the older fans. (Big Lebowski, Derpy Pony, etc)

However I find the majority of the fanbase to be insufferable, there's a reason certain sites have banned all discussion on the show.

For the article itself, its well written and I appreciate the effort you took to add content to the site, but this site is already lacking a lot of anime content and discussion. Wouldn't it be better to have a column actually about anime?

This x 1000. Why is this being covered here and why is it in the wiki? It's not anime. Not saying it's a bad show, but this is a ANIME/MANGA website with a wiki for ANIME/MANGA. Hell, anime is even in the title of the site. Why are we covering things that aren't anime/manga or anime/manga related?

From what I can tell our community is pretty good about it, we aren't running around typing in all caps babbling about muffins and whatever else. That said though, if you want to avoid the pony subject all together, just steer clear of the weekly pony article. Don't worry, I'm not turning this site into the next Equestria Daily.

Thanks, it means a lot that you took the time to read it. As for anime articles, the moderators alone are already working on 8 or so a week (several should have gone up yesterday, but we have to wait for the Intern Perry to post them) this is just an extra article that I feel is worth running, especially considering the demographic the show has become popular with.

All that said, this is something of an experiment. If it turns out to be a bad fit for the site after all, I'll simply stop running it. As long as everyone can be mature about it, we should be fine.

@sickVisionz: Well aware of that, I got the okay from Ethan to run this article (read my replies to Petiew above).

MrDirector786on Jan. 25, 2012 at 7:58 a.m.

Heh. Nice article. I actually haven't started the second season yet. In fact, I haven't finished the first season because I don't actually watch this show that often but I do admit to watching it.

I didn't actually know that.

Daniel_Newton moderator on Jan. 25, 2012 at 10:22 a.m.

@Psycosis: You claim to watch the show then have nothing to say! Ugh. Damn it Ian.

@slowbird: And you aren't much better! I hear that Skyrim's pretty good though...

@sickVisionz: Lighten up man. If you don't want to read my articles about it then don't.

@MrDirector786: You have a bunch of great episodes ahead of you when you do decide to catch up. The Discord episode (the premier of season 2 I think) is pretty damn great. The Halloween episode is pretty good too.

Daniel_Newton moderator on Jan. 25, 2012 at 10:26 a.m.

@TeflonBilly: Haha yeah, Pinkie Pie was great in this episode. I didn't want to blabber on for too long in the article though, but I gave her an honourable mention in the verdict section.

Also, never break a Pinkie-Promise.

Bigheart711on Jan. 25, 2012 at 11:49 a.m.

I actually ended up being glad that I enjoyed the episode featured. (Poor Pinkie Pie. That was way too many cherries she ate. XD ) Unfortunately, it looks like News Article pages can't be made without a "related to" tag from my experience of WM articles. Was that initially why there's an MLP page here?

Daniel_Newton moderator on Jan. 25, 2012 at 11:54 a.m.

@Bigheart711: Those cherries were no match for her, Pinkie's an eating machine.

Nah, I got permission to add the pages to the database. Feel free to fill that stuff out.

ScarletKittieon Jan. 25, 2012 at 12:54 p.m.
@Newten:  Well then, if that's the case... *goes to fill them out!*
I haven't gotten the chance to watch this episode yet, so I'll refrain from reading the article until I can. Glad to see some Pony recognition here, though! I was actually wondering when it was going to be brought up since it's so popular with anime/manga fans.
RedOwl_1on Jan. 25, 2012 at 1:14 p.m.

Love it, I screamed like crazy when I hear Derpy :D, and loved the chimichanga joke sounds like a tongue-twister

PD: I'm really here just for this, no an anime fan. Greetings from CV :D
