Way Back Machine: Gainax Director Steps Down over Gurren Lagann Scandal

2 Channel!

Everyone watch episode 4 of Gurren Lagann yet? Besides a move away from the non-stop action to what could be described as the plot, the episode had another jarring difference... the animation quality.

This episode actually created quite the scandal back at its initial airing over two years ago. Guest directed by Osamu Kobayshi, who you might know for his work on BECK, the episode received plenty of negative response, particular on the dreaded 2 Channel. Gainax co-founder Takami Akai was so incised by their complaints that he took to the board himself, and insulted said fans.

The insult? Well, I'm sure it works much better in Japanese, but he basically asked the dissenters to put their face near an anus and breathe deeply.

The scandal was so large that Takami stepped down for Gainax as a result of it all. Though, as time would eventually indicate, he is back in the fold today. There you go, there's the news from the way back machine.

Well this must obviously be the best episode of the show :P

I knew sometimes the quality wasn´t good because of budget problems or deadlines, but this takes things to a whole new level (and the animation should have been dreadful enough to make him quit).

It was weird suddenly changing the anime art style in episode 4, however, I didn't think it was bad, it was just different from previous episodes. I didn't know that this episode was directed by the same man behind BECK, now I can clearly see some similarities between the two of them. XD
