Watch & Learn: TIGER & BUNNY #5

If MVC3 amalgamated the Marvel and Capcom universes, would they look like this?

Tiger doesn't look impressed by that.
Tiger doesn't look impressed by that.

I desperately want to believe that somebody involved with this has played MVC3, and that thusly accounts for one of the games’ catchphrases being this episode's title. It feels like too much of a coincidence, especially since said title doesn’t seem to have anything to do with what happens in this one. Plus, the “Good Luck Mode” these dudes break out to beat the high holy hell out of the jewel thief felt like an honest-to-goodness Hyper Combo Finish. Taking a step back, if Marvel and Capcom’s characters were ever “amalgamated,” their amalgams would likely look a lot like these knuckleheads in Hero TV.

Pop culture musings aside, I hate to say that the effusive praise chain’s going to derail a little as this was a weaker episode. Focusing on character has been great and all, but having Tiger so concerned about cheering Barnaby up with a surprise party seriously pushes the guy’s dense good nature into real childishness. Previous episodes have balanced well enough on the beam between kids’ and grown-ups’ stuff, but this surprise party business really dipped that beam down into the Saturday Morning cartoon ball pit. Didn’t they just spend an episode stressing how these heroes are constantly on call and their duties dig into their personal lives? I half-expected Tiger to try to gift Barnaby with a 10-speed bike.

This tubby villain, though - - I liked him. Maybe not so much for his gimmick but for the curt and efficient way they introduced him. He’s fat, he’s rich, his skin turns diamond hard, he likes jewelry more than he should… and that’s all you need to know. I find that a lot more effective than some protracted origin that tells us about his abusive childhood or the time that his wife was tragically murdered. Plus, it gives the shattering of the dude’s armor that much more wallop as a punchline.

The "good-luck mode" moment made me smile of glee. That was such a cool unexpected moment.

And you're right. Villains don't necessarily need backstory. Some people are just villainous because they want to be (or can be).

I felt that the "good-luck mode" was a lot funnier by the fact that it only cosmetic effect.

You can't watch this episode and not cheer at the "Good-Luck Mode" scene.

That's what I've been feeling for their whole armor suits as well lol. It's a lot less key than say iron man, but I guess it has some practical purposes, but it's mostly for cosmetics and sponsor names being plastered all over xD

Dig Deeper into Tiger & Bunny

Sunrise's new show about superpowers called "Next" work for a sponsor company and accumulate points by each feat accomplished and the best ranked hero of the season earns the title of "King of Heroes". Kotetsu T. Kaburagi is the least popular hero who is assigned with a new partner.
