I bow my head to you, TIGER & BUNNY. You got me. For the first time in a long time, I actually fell for it like a proper mark. I thought your main character was dead for sure, I thought you had the gall to actually do that and I was then genuinely surprised when you showed a certain shirtless mech-man rising up behind a certain memory-rewriting bastard.
Let me tell you, it felt good to feel some actual tension in a show without the usual damp blanket of spoilers and predetermined certainties. It might sound strange to voice appreciate about this, but I can’t understate how satisfying it was to see some actual, you know, resolution in the last episode of a show for once, too.
No cop-out played off as a “challenging” ending. No messy plotting resulting from the budget or source material running out. If TIGER & BUNNY ties things up into too neat of bow for some viewers, then I say boo. In this case, I’d rather an anime pull off a simple forward roll than attempt some obscure virtuoso trick on the parallel bars and wind up falling on its face. Characters wound up at the points their arcs were angling for (even the annoying gnats of HERO TV got redemption! Villains haven't saved the day so awesomely since the T-Rex at the end of JURASSIC PARK) and then, when all the main stuff was properly resolved, a few little crumbs were left out to wet the palette for more adventures.
And I do feel confident that there will be more. Even if I didn’t know about those reports that Sunrise is considering a second season based on the surprise ratings, I’d stand by my earlier assertion that this show’s going blow up in the West once it gets a proper dub and presentation.
I’m saving my final thoughts for the forthcoming video but, suffice it to say, this was the most satisfying conclusion I've seen for a show in a while. Still, please, pop some questions into the talkback below which you’d like to my address on camera for the forthcoming lookback.
